CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Ohio State men’s tennis team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday, falling 4-2 to No. 3-seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Team Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
The loss snapped the Buckeyes’ nine-match win streak to open the season and it was also the first loss in 10 matches against North Carolina.
The Tar Heels opened the match by winning the first two doubles matches on courts 1 and 2 to take the doubles point. The No. 3 team of Brett Clark and Robert Kelly won 6-2 over Buckeyes Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce at No. 1 and Jack Murray and Brayden Schnur topped OSU’s team of Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen 6-4.
In singles, the Buckeyes got on the board with wins from Joyce and sophomore Hugo Di Feo. Both won the first set 6-2 and then Joyce went on the close out Anudeep Kodali on court six 6-3 while Di Feo would win a second-set tie-break to top Clark.
Steinbach lost his first singles match of the year as he fell to Kelly in straight-sets. Pollanen also lost 6-2, 6-3 to Murray at the No. 4 spot. That put North Carolina in front 3-2 and the Tar Heels would clinch the match on Ronnie Schneider’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Diaz on court 2. Torpegaard fell in the first set to Schnur and was 5-5 in the second set when the match was clinched.
The Buckeyes will regroup and play a consolation match on Sunday against the loser of the quarterfinal match between Texas A&M and UCLA.
