Columbus, Ohio— Day one of the FGCU Classic is complete and Ohio State holds a slim lead over the other five teams in the field.
After winning this meet last year, OSU got off to a great start this year; the foursome of Zulal Zeren, Molly Washko, Liz Li, and Macie McNichols won the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay. Their time of 1:42.54 narrowly edged out the relay team of Florida Gulf Coast, who were just a tenth of a second slower. The very next event proved successful as well for the Buckeyes, as Meg Bailey took second in the 400 IM (4:17.01), posting the first NCAA B cut time of the season.
Kathleen Cook and Lindsey Clary represented in the 200 freestyle, posting times of 1:51.96 and 1:49.93, respectively. What followed was another Buckeye win and NCAA B time. Li won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 22.74, the only swimmer in the field to go sub-:23.
Bailey was the top Ohio State finisher in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.28 and Zeren placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:02.04). Swimming in the B final of the latter event, Kaitlyn Ferrara had the second-best time in the field with a mark of 2:01.32.
Day one ended with the 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay. Taylor Vargo (1:04.49) and Washko (1:41.31) were the two OSU swimmers in the 100 breast, while a foursome of McNichols, Maria Coy, Chantel Wynn, and Li took first in the final event of the night (3:22.90) to give Ohio State a relay sweep.
