COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State Women’s Volleyball hosts the 11th annual Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic inside St. John Arena this weekend (Sept. 5-6). The No. 22 Buckeyes (2-1) welcome in No. 14 Florida State (2-1) for a pair of contests while also facing Northern Illinois (3-1) for a lone match-up Saturday at noon.

D.C. KOEHL — A LASTING LEGACY
D.C. Koehl served as the communications director of Buckeye men’s and women’s volleyball for 30 years before passing away in January 2012. While this season marks the 11th annual Sports Imports Classic overall, the yearly home tournament has been named in honor of Koehl since 2012 as the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic.
In addition to his duties associated with the volleyball programs, Koehl became the go-to guy for football and basketball statistics during his total of 39 years working in the Ohio State Athletics Department. The Columbus native began his Buckeye days as an undergraduate manager for the men’s basketball program, working under Hall of Fame coach Fred Taylor. After graduating from Ohio State with a degree in public recreation in 1973, Koehl hopped on board full-time with the Athletics Communications group. His love for the sport of volleyball extended into a role as the communications director for the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, a league the OSU men’s program has been a member of since its inception in 1961.
HISTORY WITH THE SEMINOLES AND HUSKIES
Ohio State last faced each Florida State and Northern Illinois in 2013. Coincidentally, both matches came on the road and resulted in five-set Buckeye victories. OSU holds a 2-1 upper hand all-time over the Seminoles and leads NIU, 9-2. Following wins by the Huskies in 1972 and ’73, the Buckeyes have won the next nine consecutive tilts by a combined set total of 24-3.
HOME COOKIN’
Ohio State Women’s Volleyball has won nearly 70 percent of its matches inside St. John Arena all-time. The Buckeyes began competition in the facility in 1986, compiling an overall mark of 298-126 (.698). Ohio State’s 11-2 ledger at home last season included a 3-0 run and Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic championship. The Buckeyes have captured six of 10 Sports Imports Classics titles total and five of the last six events.
TWO BUCKEYES EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AT THE RUMBLE IN THE ROCKIES
Junior classmates, Valeria León and Taylor Sandbothe, both picked up All-Tournament recognition at the Rumble in the Rockies last weekend out in Wyoming. León averaged 4.30 digs per set while Sandbothe accumulated 30 kills at a .385 attacking clip.
Taylor Sandbothe VOTED TO THE PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Taylor Sandbothe, a junior middle blocker, was voted to the Preseason All-Big Ten squad by the conference’s head coaches. The Buckeye is one of just 14 student-athletes to receive this distinction. After picking up AVCA All-America honorable mention as a sophomore 2014, Sandbothe was also selected to participate in the first ever Big Ten Foreign Volleyball Tour this past summer. The group travelled and competed in several European countries over the span of two weeks.
