COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University football h-backs Jalin Marshall, a third-year sophomore from Middletown, Ohio, and Dontre Wilson, a true junior from DeSoto, Texas, have been named to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse. The five-year-old award honors the most versatile player in the country.
Marshall played in all 15 games last season and was the second-leading receiver for the College Football Playoff national champions with 38 receptions for 499 yards and six touchdowns. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter had more receptions as a freshman at Ohio State — 41 for 648 yards with eight touchdowns in 1984 — than Marshall had as a frosh.
Marshall also contributed 104 plays on special teams last season and was one of the top punt returners in the nation, talents that have earned him accolades as a preseason All-American heading into the 2015 campaign. He averaged 11.8 yards-per-return with a long return of 54 yards and one score. His average ranked second in the Big Ten Conference and ninth nationally.
Wilson enters his junior campaign with 43 career receptions for 510 yards and five scores. He also has a career rushing average of 7.1 yards per carry with 350 yards off 49 carries and one touchdown. Wilson trails only Ezekiel Elliott on the team in all-purpose yards with 2,047, a total that includes a two-year team-high 1,187 return yards off 57 returns (43 kickoffs at 24.4 yards per return and 14 punts at 9.7 yards per return).
Wilson played extensively in the first nine games of the season last year, making three starts (vs. Virginia Tech, Cincinnati and Maryland), and catching 21 passes for an even 300 yards with three scores. He was also averaging 5.6 yards per carry with 100 yards off 18 rushes, but a foot injury in the win at Michigan State ended his season except for three plays in the national championship game vs. Oregon.
The Paul Hornung Award is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award was created by the LSC in January 2010 with the support of Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
