COLUMBUS, Ohio — Logan Stieber of the wrestling team and Kayla Sullivan of the women’s ice hockey team were recognized by the Big Ten as Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday.
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university’s list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
On the mat, Stieber made history this year when he became just the fourth wrestler in NCAA history to win four national titles. The Monroeville native also led the Buckeyes to their first team national championship in the 94-year history of the program. He won every major conference and national award, including the coveted Dan Hodge Trophy, given every year to the nation’s top wrestler and considered to be the Heisman Trophy of wrestling.
Off the mat, Stieber is part of a team that has volunteered over 700 hours of community service throughout central Ohio this year, taking part in activities such as reading to student at local schools through the 2nd and 7 Foundation. He graduated this past May with his degree in criminology and will remain in Columbus as he trains for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
A leader for the Buckeyes on and off the ice, Sullivan was one of 15 nominees for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is bestowed annually to college hockey’s finest citizen.
Since early 2013, Sullivan has been working with Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that matches children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams. Working with the organization to find a match for the Ohio State women’s hockey team, her goal was achieved in October 2014 when Erin Selfe, a fifth-grader at Liking Valley Intermediate, signed an honorary letter of intent to join the Buckeyes. Sullivan is also an active asset to the 2nd and Seven Foundation, which promotes reading by providing free books and positive role models to children in need.
