COLUMBUS, Ohio — The coaching staff is now four years into the Ohio State Football Women’s Clinic and the women on hand for a day of workouts just seem to get more and more enthused and excited as the event continues to get bigger and better.
“It’s the Ohio State Buckeyes, come on,” said Danielle Miranda, an Ohio State graduate who lives in Columbus. “This is just awesome that we get to have that personal relationship with the coaches while at the same time get that behind the scenes feel and look of where they work and how they train the players.”
Leshel Hutchings, from Westerville and who was a first-timer at the clinic with Miranda and another friend, Natasha Davis, from Grandview, was looking forward to a good workout.
“We’re here to have fun with friends and to interact with the coaches we see every week, but I want a physical workout,” she said.
She, and about 900 others who were in attendance, got it.
A morning session inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center included photos with coach Urban Meyer and the assistants, highlight videos, “quick cals” led by Mickey Marotti, a physical exercise and warm-up activity, and a sometimes daring and personal Q&A session with some current players, including starting left tackle Taylor Decker and starting linebacker Joshua Perry and tours of the facility.
The clinic moved to the turf fields outside the “Woody” for an afternoon session of shoulder pad relay races, a rotation through a dozen stations of drills and then the day ended with Coach Mick’s popular “smokehouse” races.
The clinic is truly for the masses. One lady in the front row, who was called out by Meyer, has been to all four clinics. She’s 86.
A pregnant woman was spotted chilling in the back of the Woody. Not sure what drills, if any, she did, but she was in attendance and having a good time.
One woman, Ann from California, was given an Ohio State football tee-shirt to cover up the blue tank top she was wearing. Then she ripped off 10 push-ups with the crowd roaring and counting them down.
And another woman, Mary Phillips, was here with three of her friends after winning an auction item from her hometown Naples, Fla., Ohio State Alumni Club. She and her friends — Barb Cockerill from Delaware, Ohio, Judi Brenning, from Pickerington, and Susan Micknight, from Lewis Center — were clearly having a good time after spending two nights at the Blackwell Inn and enjoying some of the best restaurants Columbus has to offer.
“This has been a great experience,” Cockerill said.
The fact that funds raised from the clinic support the Urban & Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research at the James is certainly a draw for many of the women. And that is a top of mind fact for many of the coaches as well.
“We consider it an honor and a privilege to be with you today,” assistant Kerry Coombs told the contingent. “You are helping to raise money that will save lives.”
Being up close to the Buckeye coaches and student-athletes and being inside their world for a day will be hard to top as the No. 1 draw, though.
“This is really a unique and fun experience,” Kim Cremers, from Upper Arlington, said. “This is a great opportunity to experience what the players experience.”
Cremers’ friend, Renee Pachol, from Warren, Ohio, was a first-time camper who drove three hours early Sunday morning to arrive on time. She knew she was going to have fun.
“My husband is jealous in a good way that I get to do this,” Pachol said. “But it’s all good. He’s the one who registered me for the clinic.”
