COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior captain Curtis Grant is heading west to pursue a career in the National Football League as a San Diego Charger. Grant confirmed today he has agreed to a free agent deal with the Chargers. He will be one of seven Buckeyes off the 2014 national championship squad in team mini camps this spring.
A 6-3, 238-pound middle linebacker from Richmond, Va., and Hermitage High School, Grant played in 46 games as a Buckeye and started 30 times, including 12 starts as a junior in 2013. He was a starter in all 15 games during the Buckeyes’ 2014 national championship season. He accumulated 131 tackles during his career.
Grant, who played in 10 games as a true freshman and eight as a sophomore, improved considerably and notably as a junior and senior and was one of the Buckeyes key defensive players during that time. He had a personal-best 69 tackles as a senior with five tackles-for-loss. He recorded a career-high 13 tackles against Virginia Tech, had 10 tackles in the Sugar Bowl win over No. 1-ranked Alabama and tallied six tackles in the Buckeyes’ national championship game win over Oregon.
Grant joins draft picks Devin Smith (New York Jets), Jeff Heuerman (Denver Broncos), Doran Grant (Pittsburgh Steelers), Michael Bennett (Jacksonville Jaguars), Evan Spencer (Washington Redskins) and Darryl Baldwin (Baltimore Ravens) as Buckeyes off the 2014 team on their way to the NFL.
