Buckeyes honored at Reds’ Opening Night – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of Ohio State’s 2014 national championship football team were honored Wednesday evening as part of the Cincinnati Reds’ opening night festivities at Great American Ball Park. The Reds were hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates in their second game of the season.
It didn’t matter that proceedings were delayed nearly two hours by a rain delay. The Buckeyes, and the fans sitting out the rain delay, had a really good time.
Coach Urban Meyer, who has an extensive family history in the city and who is a 1986 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, assistant coach and long-time Cincinnati Colerain head football coach Kerry Combs, and Cincinnati Buckeyes Adolphus Washington (Taft High School) and Joe Burger (LaSalle) threw out ceremonial first pitches.
All 40 members of the team who were in attendance, including quarterbacks Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett, senior tight end Nick Vannett and returning starters Joshua Perry, Tyvis Powell and Pat Elflein, had field duty during the playing of the National Anthem as they were in charge of holding the giant American flag in center field.
A loud and raucous group of fans cheered and celebrated the Buckeyes as each player walked the Reds’ Carpet before the game.
And the Reds presented Meyer and with an oversized check in the amount of $3,000, a total that will be donated to the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research at the Ohio State University Medical Center.
The team didn’t get to see any baseball, and it was a school night, so the players and staff loaded up the busses for the trip back to Columbus about 9:20 p.m.
