Athletes of the Week
Sandy Niehaus, women’s tennis
- Niehaus claimed her eighth-straight singles victory as she prevailed 6-1, 6-1 vs. Neda Kopricina of Texas. The win marks her 15th victory this spring as she improves to 12-2 at Ohio State’s No. 3 singles position. She also garnered a doubles point in Ohio State’s win over the No. 29 Longhorns alongside teammate Gabriella De Santis.
Carter Brown, men’s lacrosse
- Brown tallied a career-high six goals in Ohio State’s 15-12 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins. He is second on the team with 24 goals, 13 assists and 37 points this year and has five games with four or more points.
No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse (9-3, 2-0 B1G)
- In front of 2,004 fans in Ohio Stadium, the men’s lacrosse posted a 15-12 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins Sunday night in the inaugural Big Ten Conference lacrosse game in Columbus.
- In a matchup that was tied nine times, Ohio State broke the game open with a three-goal run late in the fourth quarter to pull away and secure the conference victory over the Blue Jays.
Women’s Golf
- The women’s golf team registered another top-5 finish at the Web.com Intercollegiate after shooting 4-over 292 on the final day. All six Buckeye individuals finished in the top half of the 96-player field.
Baseball (21-7, 6-2 B1G)
- With the bat of Troy Montgomery, the baseball team claimed its fifth walk-off win of the season, defeating Penn State, 7-6, Sunday on a beautiful afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The team previously defeated Penn State by a six-run margin on Saturday.
- In mid-week action, L Grant Davis hit a walk-off, three-run home run to give the Ohio State a 7-4 win over Ohio on a chilly and windy Tuesday night. The homerun was the first of Davis’ career at any level.
No. 1 Women’s Rowing
- The women’s rowing team put on a dominating performance Saturday at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., earning three victories against No. 4 Virginia while finishing 5-0 against Clemson.
- Ohio State’s 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 boats are a perfect 12-0 to open the season.
Track & Field
- Ohio State’s distance runners starred at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. Senior Katie Borchers set her fourth school record of the season in the 1500-meter run (4:23.28), while senior Jackson Neff posted the fifth-fastest time in the nation this season in the 3000-meter steeplechase (8:45.37). In the 10,000-meter run, juniors Sakiko and Minori Minagawa posted the No. 2 and No. 3 times in school history, crossing the finish line in 34:27.31 and 34:34.82, respectively.
- Redshirt junior J.C. Murasky continued his strong start to the season Saturday at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, winning both the shot put and discus
Women’s Gymnastics
- The women’s gymnastics team posted a 195.650 for a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Columbus Regional Saturday night in St. John Arena.
- With her fourth-place finish after a 39.250 in the all-around, Buckeye freshman Taylor Harrison advanced to compete at the NCAA championships in two weeks in Fort Worth, Texas.
No. 19 Women’s Tennis (15-4, 7-0 B1G)
- In the first meeting between the programs, the women’s tennis team emerged victorious vs. No. 29 Texas, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas.
- The win marks the squad’s ninth-consecutive victory and closes the Buckeyes’ nonconference campaign with nine wins vs. ranked opponents.
No. 11 Men’s Tennis (18-7, 6-1 B1G)
- In their first outdoor home match of the season, the men’s tennis team took down Wisconsin 6-1 to finish the weekend 2-0 and take sole possession of second place in the Big Ten.
- Previously, the Buckeyes kicked off a four-match home stand on Friday with a 4-2 victory against 29th-ranked Minnesota.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (19-6, 9-3 MIVA)
- The men’s volleyball team returned to Columbus with a pair of road conference victories, dropping Quincy in four sets Saturday evening. The Buckeyes swept Lindenwood Friday night to start off a successful voyage into the central time zone.
Softball (19-16, 3-6 B1G)
- Sophomore Alex Bayne came off the bench to deliver two big hits and an RBI and the Ohio State offense picked up three critical insurance runs in the sixth inning of a 5-4 victory over Nebraska Sunday at Buckeye Field.
