Athletes of the Week
Women’s Golf
- Four Buckeyes finished fifth or better on the individual leaderboard at the 2015 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, propelling Ohio State to a share of the Big Ten title. Sophomore Katja Pogacar placed the highest, sharing runner-up honors with Maryland’s Juliet Vongphoumy at 2-under on the weekend. Senior captain Jan Chanpalangsri was one-shot back to place fourth of 84 competitors. Jessica Porvasnik and Rio Watanabe both tied for fifth at 1-over.
Boo Timko, men’s golf
- Timko, a senior, finished in the Top 10 at the Big Ten championships for the third-consecutive season. A second-round 68 moved him up the leaderboard before an even par 72 in Round 3 solidified his seventh-place finish.
Women’s Golf
- The women’s golf team was crowned Big Ten champions for a second consecutive season and conference-best 13th time since 1982.
- The latter of back-to-back B1G co-championships is a monumental one for Ohio State, marking the 100th tournament title in program history.
- As a team, the Buckeyes tied for first with Northwestern, carding a 1-under 863 at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis.
Baseball (31-10, 12-3 B1G)
- The baseball team took both games of a doubleheader to sweep a three-game series against Northwestern Sunday at Rocky Miller Park. The Buckeyes won the first game, 6-3, before coming back to defeat the Wildcats, 5-2, in 11 innings in game two.
- With the sweep of the Wildcats, the Buckeyes improve their win streak to a season-high seven games.
No. 18 Women’s Tennis (20-6, 11-1 B1G)
- The women’s tennis team earned a spot in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament Championship final Saturday evening as the Buckeyes defeated No. 3-seed and host Northwestern, 4-1, in the semifinals at Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.
- The Big Ten Tournament championship appearance was Ohio State’s first since the 2004 season.
No. 12 Men’s Tennis (25-8, 10-1 B1G)
- The men’s tennis team qualified for the Big Ten tournament finals for the 12th-consecutive season with a 4-0 victory over No. 3-seed Minnesota in semifinal action on Saturday in Urbana, Ill.
Men’s Golf
- Backed by a seventh-place showing from Timko, Ohio State tied for fifth overall in the team standings at the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships. The Buckeyes tallied an overall total of 31-over 1183.
No. 10 Men’s Volleyball (22-8, 12-5 B1G)
- The men’s volleyball team extended its 2015 season by sweeping Ball State and advancing into the MIVA tournament semifinals, where they will face second-seeded and defending national champion Loyola.
- Ohio State held the Cardinals under 20 points in two of three sets, outscoring BSU by a total of 17 in the MIVA quarterfinal battle.
No. 1 Women’s Rowing
- Ohio State won all six races Saturday morning in its regular-season finale against No. 13 Michigan, No. 17 Syracuse and Michigan State at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
- In the final race of the day, the first varsity eight capped an undefeated regular season with a winning time of 6:19.8, five seconds faster than second-place Michigan. The 1V8 closes the regular season 10-0 in races and 27-0 overall. The boat is 22-0 in races and 61-0 overall since the start of the 2014 season.
Track & Field
- Three event titles and school records in the women’s sprint medley (3:47.87), distance medley (11:28.83) and 4×800-meter (8:36.97) relays highlighted the final day at the 2015 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, for the Ohio State track and field team.
- Boosted by a strong first leg by junior Alexis Franklin, the Buckeye women crossed the finish line in a time of 54.35 seconds to claim victory in the shuttle hurdle relay. Previously, Franklin won the women’s 400-meter hurdles (57.40) for the second-consecutive season on the opening day of competition.
- In the men’s shot put, redshirt junior J.C. Murasky placed first out of 24 competitors with a throw of 19.68 meters (64-6.75).
Softball (26-21, 9-11 B1G)
- The softball team split two games on Sunday to close out its three-game set at Northwestern, winning a wild 20-17 decision in the first contest before dropping the final game, 9-3, at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
- Earlier in the week, Alex Bayne went two-for-three with two home runs and four RBI as Ohio State registered a 12-4 victory over Ohio University in five innings at Buckeye Field.
