Athletes of the Week
Logan Stieber, wrestling
- Stieber became Ohio State’s first four-time Big Ten champion and the 14th in conference history at the 2015 Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. He was also named the Big Ten’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and the Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships.
Kelsey Mitchell, women’s basketball
- Mitchell led the Buckeyes in their Big Ten title game matchup vs. No. 3 Maryland with 31 points. Named to the All-Tournament Team, she became the first player this season to score 800 points as she has 825 on the season. The total is an OSU single-season school-record. She also hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime to lift Ohio State to a win over No. 14 Iowa in the semifinals.
No. 5 Wrestling
- Ohio State won its first Big Ten conference championship in 64 years Sunday at the 2015 Big Ten Championships at St. John Arena, tying Iowa for the team title. It is the sixth time in Big Ten history co-champions has been crowned.
- The Buckeyes, who had four finalists, got the finals session started in a big way as redshirt freshman Nathan Tomasello avenged an earlier loss to Iowa’s Thomas Gilman with a 3-2 decision in the 125 pound final.
- Stieber took his place in Ohio State and Big Ten history, defeating Iowa’s Josh Dziewa by technical fall, 16-1, in the 141 pound final.
Women’s Basketball (23-10, 13-5 B1G)
- Ohio State dug out of a 15-point second half hole to No. 1-seed and fourth-ranked Maryland but the Terrapins were able to hold on for a 77-74 victory in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday.
- The No. 3-seed Buckeyes advanced to the championship game with a 91-85 overtime victory over No. 2-seed and 14th-ranked Iowa in the semifinals Saturday and an 83-71 victory over No. 6-seed Minnesota in the quarterfinals Friday.
Men’s Hockey (12-18-2, 7-11-0-0 B1G)
- On senior night, the Ohio State men’s hockey team topped No. 15 Minnesota, 5-2, in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes scored the game’s final four goals, including three in the third period, for the win.
- Ten Buckeyes had at least a point in the victory, with five goal scorers. Senior captains Tanner Fritz and Matt Johnson each had a goal and an assist, with freshman Matthew Weis picking up two assists.
No. 23 Men’s Basketball (22-9, 11-7 B1G)
- Ohio State head coach Thad Matta tied the school record for coaching victories Wednesday night, registering win No. 297 at OSU as the Buckeyes earned a 77-67 victory at Penn State.
- Ohio State freshman D’Angelo Russell was been named a finalist for the Jerry West Award Monday. The award is given to the best shooting guard in college basketball.
No. 8 Men’s Gymnastics
- The men’s gymnastics team used a season-best score of 436.250 to defeat the Ukrainian and Canadian National Teams at the 2015 Arnold Challenge Saturday afternoon at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
No. 22 Women’s Tennis (8-4, 2-0 B1G)
- The women’s tennis team notched its first B1G road win of the spring campaign, downing No. 37 Illinois, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in Urbana, Ill.
- The Buckeyes also defeated Northwestern at home, 6-1, Friday.
No. 10/14 Women’s Lacrosse (6-1, 0-0 B1G)
- Jennifer Porretto tied a career high with four goals and Katie Chase recorded three goals and an assist as Ohio State improved to 6-1 with a 17-12 win at Duquesne in Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.
Men’s Lacrosse (5-2, 0-0 B1G)
- The men’s lacrosse team stayed undefeated at home, downing Hofstra, 9-8, Saturday in Ohio Stadium.
- The teams were tied after the first, second and third quarters but the Buckeyes outscored Hofstra 2-1 in the fourth quarter for the win.
Baseball (6-4, 0-0 B1G)
- The baseball team tallied a season-high 15 hits on 10 runs to claim a 10-1 victory at Western Kentucky Sunday in Bowling Green, Ky.
Pistol
- The pistol team hosted an NRA Air Pistol Sectional last weekend in Columbus. Ohio State faired well, taking the first four individual places. Freshman Mike Soklaski earned top honors, shooting a 557.
Synchronized Swimming
- The synchronized swimming team completed its final tune-up for the U.S. Collegiate National Championships with a runner-up finish at the North Regional Championship in Brown Deer, Wisc.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (13-4, 6-2 MIVA)
- Win number 13 came on the road for the men’s volleyball team, downing George Mason in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 28-26).
Softball
- The softball team split its two games on Saturday at the Husky Classic in Seattle, highlighted by a walk-off win over Cal State Northridge in the day’s first contest.
- Ohio State’s offense erupted for five runs in the eighth inning, keyed by a three-run double by pinch hitter Erika Leonard, as the Buckeyes defeated Miami, 8-3, on Friday in its opener of the Husky Classic.
Women’s Gymnastics
- The women’s gymnastics team tallied a 194.775 in a tri-meet at No. 17 Denver with Air Force. The Buckeyes finished second behind Denver’s 196.500 and ahead of Air Force’s 193.450.
