OLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s hockey senior captain Tanner Fritz has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Fritz led the Buckeyes with four points in the team’s sweep of Penn State last weekend.
Fritz, from Grande Prairie, Alberta, had two goals and two assists in the Buckeyes’ back-to-back 5-3 wins over Penn State. Friday, his power play goal early in the second period gave Ohio State a lead it would not relinquish. Saturday, he scored the eventual gamewinner at 10:19 of the third period in the team’s comeback victory. He had an assist on a power play goal in the second period that tied the game and also had a helper on a third-period tally that put Ohio State up by two.
Fritz now leads the Buckeyes with 13 assists and 23 points this season. He is on a four-game point streak, with four goals, four assists and eight points in the stretch. This is his second Big Ten honors this season; he was the league’s second star Oct. 14.
The Buckeyes close their home slate with two games vs. No. 15 Minnesota this weekend. The teams will meet at 5 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. Fritz and his seven classmates will be honored in a Senior Night ceremony pregame Saturday.
