Ohio State Shuts Out Wisconsin to Close Regular Season – Ohio State Buckeyes

MADISON, Wis. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team shut out Wisconsin, 2-0, Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Junior Tyler Lundey and freshman Matthew Weis had the Buckeye goals for the second night in a row and sophomore goalie Matt Tomkins stopped all 17 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season. The Buckeyes (13-18-3, 8-11-1-1 B1G) end the series with a 1-0-1-1 record vs. the Badgers (4-25-5, 2-15-3-2 B1G) after a 2-2 overtime tie and shootout win Friday.
The Buckeyes head to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit this week for the Big Ten Tournament. Ohio State, the No. 5 seed, will play No. 4 Penn State in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m., with No. 3 Michigan taking on No. 6 Wisconsin at 8 p.m. Thursday. Minnesota claims the B1G regular season title, and tournament’s No. 1 seed, for the second year in a row. Michigan State will be the No. 2 seed. Both the Gophers and Spartans have a bye into the semifinals.
Ohio State and Wisconsin were scoreless in the first period. Ohio State put eight shots on net, with Wisconsin getting four through. Each team had one power play chance.
In the second period, sophomore David Gust passed out from near the faceoff circle to Lundey all alone in front and he was able to score into an open net with the goalie out of position. Junior Anthony Greco had the second assist on the goal, Lundey’s seventh of the year. Ohio State outshot the Badgers, 19-7, in the period. The Buckeyes had a major power play for the final 4:09 of the second period, with the last 51 seconds in the third, but were unable to convert.
Weis made it a two-goal game at 10:50 of the third, as he took a pass from senior Darik Angeli and skated down the left side, beating the Wisconsin goalie shortside. Senior Clark Cristofoli had the second assist on the tally, Weis’ eighth of the year. Ohio State outshot Wisconsin, 15-6, in the period.
Ohio State outshot Wisconsin, 42-17, in the game. Tomkins made 17 saves in 60 minutes for his second career shutout and first since blanking Michigan State Nov. 21. Wisconsin’s Joel Rumpel made 40 saves in 59:05
Neither team was able to score on the power play. Ohio State was 0-for-4 and Wisconsin was 0-for-3.
