Ohio State Tops No. 15 Michigan, 5-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 5-3 win over No. 15-ranked Michigan Friday in Value City Arena. Ohio State led 2-1 after the first period on two goals from senior Matt Johnson. The Wolverines tied the game 4:45 into the second but senior Tanner Fritz put Ohio State back ahead less than three minutes later. The Buckeyes carried the one-goal lead until late in the third when senior Darik Angeli scored for a two-goal advantage at 17:55. The Wolverines responded with an extra attacker goal 36 seconds later, but sophomore Nick Schilkey sealed the Buckeye win with an empty net goal at 19:25.
The Buckeyes (9-16-2, 4-9-0-0 B1G) and Wolverines (16-11-0, 8-5-0-0 B1G) will close the regular season series at 5 p.m. Sunday in a game televised by FOX Sports Detroit/SportsTime Ohio and on the radio on 1460 AM in Columbus.
The line of seniors Fritz and Johnson and freshman Christian Lampasso led the way offensively with three goals and five assists combined. The Buckeye defense blocked 27 shots, led by seven shot blocks from junior Craig Dalrymple, and Christian Frey made 36 saves in the Ohio State net, while Ohio State’s penalty kill was 4-for-4 and allowed just one shot on goal.
Fritz’s goal was the 100th point of his Buckeye career and he had the fourth three-point night of his career with a goal and two assists. He now has 32 goals, 69 assists and 101 points as a Buckeye. Johnson had his third multiple-goal game of the season with two goals and his third three-point outing.
The Wolverines scored the game’s first goal when Dylan Larkin tallied from just outside the crease at 3:52. Johnson tied the game at 7:35, getting to the puck in front with a penalty upcoming on the Wolverines. Freshman Nicholas Jones and senior Al McLean assisted on the goal, Johnson’s 11th of the year. At 18:16 Johnson put the Buckeyes ahead, scoring from near the post after work down low from Lampasso and Fritz. Shots were 11-10 in favor of Ohio State in the period. Each team had one power play chance.
At 4:45 of the second period, Michigan’s Zach Hyman tied the game at two when he scored on the fly from near the faceoff circle right after the Buckeyes were unable to convert an odd-man rush. At 7:11, Fritz put Ohio State ahead 3-2, scoring on the rebound of a Johnson shot from right in front of the net. Lampasso had the second helper on the goal, Fritz’s seventh of the year and his 100th career point. The teams combined for 25 shots in the period, with Frey stopping 12-of-13 Wolverine attempts. Each team had one power play.
Ohio State held its one-goal lead until 17:55 of the third when Angeli one-timed a slap shot off a loose puck to put Ohio State up 4-2. The Wolverines pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and converted, with Tyler Motte scoring, at 18:31 to cut the lead to one. At 19:25, Schilkey’s shot from the neutral zone traveled down the ice and into the net to seal the win. Fritz and sophomore David Gust assisted on the goal, Schilkey’s seventh of the year. Frey stopped 15 shots in the period, as the Wolverines outshot the Buckeyes, 16-9. Michigan had two power play chances and Ohio State had one in the period.
Michigan outshot Ohio State, 39-32, in the game. Frey had 36 saves in all 60 minutes and now has a .910 save percentage on the year. Michigan’s Steve Racine made 27 stops in 58:41, allowing four goals.
Ohio State blocked 27 Michigan shot attempts, with at least one from 10 players. Dalrymple had a team-high seven, sophomore Josh Healey blocked four and Fritz and freshman Janik Moser blocked three each.
Neither team scored on the power play. Ohio State was 0-for-3 and stopped Michigan on four chances.
Fritz leads the Buckeyes with 18 points this season and Lampasso has a team-high 12 assists after his third two-assist night. Johnson is second on the team with 12 goals and tied with Anthony Greco for second with 17 points. Schilkey is fourth on the squad with 16 points. Ohio State’s five goals stopped a streak with two or fewer goals in each of the last six games.
