Athletes of the Week
Danielle Gagne, women’s hockey
- Gagne tallied the game-winning goal to lead Ohio State to 4-3 win on senior night over No. 3 Wisconsin. Providing the Buckeyes a two-goal lead in the third period of play, Gagne was one of five seniors who posted points in the defining victory.
Jesse King, men’s lacrosse
- King, a senior this season, led the Buckeyes offensively with five goals and six points in a win over Delaware on Sunday. King, who extended his point streak to 39 games (76g, 56a, 132p in the stertch), had the third five-goal game of his Buckeye career and first since April 12, 2014 vs. Michigan.
No. 23 Men’s Basketball (19-7, 8-5 B1G)
- Senior Sam Thompson scored a career-high 22 points to lead No. 23 Ohio State past Penn State 75-55 on Wednesday night. The Buckeyes have won five of their last seven games.
Women’s Basketball (17-9, 9-5 B1G)
- Freshman Kelsey Mitchell scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half as Ohio State closed the game on a 28-11 run to defeat Michigan, 77-73, Tuesday night at Value City Arena.
Men’s Lacrosse (2-1, 0-0 B1G)
- The men’s lacrosse team earned a 10-3 win over Delaware on Sunday. The defense held the Blue Hens to just one goal over the last three quarters and without a goal in the final 27:42.
- Ohio State shut out Robert Morris for 22:52 of game time in a 10-6 win on Tuesday.
No. 10/12 Women’s Lacrosse (4-0, 0-0 B1G)
- Highlighting a 14-7 victory over the Hokies Sunday was senior Jackie Cifarelli, who finished with one goal and two assists to become Ohio State’s all-time assists leader with 140 for her career.
- Katie Chase led the Buckeyes with five goals and seven draw controls in a 20-12 win over Winthrop Friday, while Jennifer Porretto added four goals and Cifarelli eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists.
Women’s Hockey (17-12-3, 12-11-3-1 WCHA)
- Ohio State (17-12-3, 12-11-3-1 WCHA) upset third-ranked Wisconsin by a score of 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink.
- The Buckeyes tallied the go-ahead goal six minutes into the third period. Short-handed at the time of the play, a face-off win set up a strike from sophomore Claudia Kepler, her 11th goal of the season.
Men’s Hockey (8-16-2, 3-9-0-0 B1G)
- Ohio State downed Wisconsin, 2-1, Friday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes but goals from junior Tyler Lundey and sophomore Nick Schilkey in the second lifted the team to the win.
- Sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 22 saves in the victory.
No. 27 Women’s Tennis (5-2, 0-0 B1G)
- Ohio State clinched its second win of the weekend, defeating No. 19 Georgia Tech, 4-3, on Saturday after shutting out No. 31 Tennessee, 7-0, Friday. The Buckeyes claimed the doubles point and three singles matches against GT en route to their third victory vs. a ranked opponent this spring.
No. 8 Men’s Tennis (10-3, 0-0 B1G)
- The Buckeyes edged Texas, 4-3, in a Round of 16 contest at the 2015 ITA Indoor Team Championships in Chicago. OSU claimed the doubles point and wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
No. 12 Men’s Volleyball (10-2, 4-0 MIVA)
- Ohio State defeated Penn State in three sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) on Wednesday, collecting the 1,000th win in program history. The victory also represented the 500th Buckeye triumph inside St. John Arena all-time.
- On Saturday, the Buckeyes concluded an undefeated seven-match home stand with an exclamation point, topping Saint Francis in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-16).
Baseball (3-0, 0-0 B1G)
- Ohio State completed its first weekend sweep of the 2015 season, defeating Pittsburgh, 8-0, Sunday. Senior pitcher Ryan Riga threw six scoreless innings to help the team claim a 3-0 record at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
- The Buckeyes previously recorded comeback wins over Saint Louis, 6-5, on Saturday and George Mason, 4-3, on Friday.
Softball (7-1, 0-0 B1G)
- Senior Taylor Watkins tied her career high with five RBI as Ohio State scored nine times in the final two innings to pull away for a 15-6 victory over Buffalo on the final day of the Maverick Invitational Sunday.
- A walk-off win in the opener and a five-inning rout in the second game highlighted the Ohio State’s first day of the Maverick Invitational on Friday. The Buckeyes defeated Sam Houston State, 4-3, in nine innings before rolling past Incarnate Word, 13-1.
No. 9 Men’s Swimming & Diving
- Freshman Joey Long added first-place points for the Buckeyes with a top finish in the 1650 freestyle (15:35.96) Sunday at the Ohio State Winter Invite. The 200 freestyle resulted in Ohio State sweeping the Top-3 places, as Josh Fleagle (1:35.54) claimed first and Vladislav Komarov (1:37.95) and Alex Rosen (1:39.48) followed in second and third, respectively. Fleagle and Komarov accounted for two NCAA B-cut times.
No. 23 Women’s Swimming & Diving
- Freestyle specialist Alex Wittman tallied two victories for the Buckeyes at the Ohio State Winter Invite. On Friday, she swam to a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a NCAA B-cut time of 4:52.06 in prelims, followed by an outright victory in finals at 4:53.53. Saturday, she achieved the top spot in the 1650 freestyle in 16:44.68. Wittman proceeded to earn second-place accolades in the 200 freestyle (1:52.34) in the following race.
Track and Field
- Senior Katie Borchers set school records in the mile (4:41.19) and 1000-meter run (2:45.05) over the weekend at the SPIRE DI Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
- Ohio State cruised to victories in both the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay. In the men’s final, OSU turned in a winning run of 3:07.84, the No. 2 time in the Big Ten this season and the 11th fastest in Division I. A season-best time of 3:38.63 was posted in the women’s final, the third-best time in school indoor history.
- A first-place finish in the 60-meter dash by senior Chesna Sykes was also a highlight. Sykes crossed the finish line in 7.35 seconds.
Synchronized Swimming
- Ohio State took a pair of matches against Arizona over the weekend in Tucson, Ariz. The Buckeyes scored 101 points on Saturday and 89 points on Sunday.
