COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s hockey team returns to Columbus for a two-game Big Ten Conference series vs. Wisconsin. The Buckeyes (7-15-2, 2-8-0-0 B1G) and Badgers (2-18-4, 0-8-2-2 B1G) will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday and at 7 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.

- The game Friday will be televised by BTN, with Dan Kelly, Blake Geoffrion and Lisa Byington on the call.
- The game Saturday will be broadcast by American Sports Network and Sam Smith and Joel Goldberg will call the action. The game is available in Columbus and Cincinnati on The CW, in Dayton on MyTV/This TV and in Toledo on RetroTV, as well as in Charleston-Huntington W.Va., on GetTV. Outlets in Wisconsin will also carry the broadcast. Fans should check their local listings for the exact channel on their cable system.

Buckeye Snapshot
- The Buckeyes are coming off two losses at Minnesota last week and are 7-15-2 overall and 2-8-0 in the Big Ten.
- Ohio State is averaging 2.62 goals a game and allowing 3.62 goals a contest. The power play is 13-for-87 (.149) and the penalty kill is 56-for-78 (.718).
- Junior Anthony Greco leads the team with 13 goals and 16 points. Senior Matt Johnson is second with 10 goals and one of three Buckeyes tied for third with 14 points, joined by sophomore Nick Schilkey (5g, 9a) and freshman Matthew Weis (4g, 10a). Weis and freshman Christian Lampasso share the team lead with 10 assists each. Senior Tanner Fritz is second on the squad with 15 points, with six goals and nine assists.
- In goal, sophomores Christian Frey and Matt Tomkins have both seen significant time for the Buckeyes. Frey has started and played in 13 games, (including six of the last eight outings), posting a 3.39 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. Tomkins has played in 13 games total (starting 11) and has a 3.56 goals-against average and .870 save percentage. Logan Davis has played limited time in two games and has a 2.75 goals-against average and .846 save percentage.
Buckeyes vs. Badgers
- Ohio State is 3-13-0 all-time vs. Wisconsin, with a 1-4-0 ledger in Columbus.
- The first eight games between the teams were between 1965-69, with the next three matchups all neutral site games from 2004-07. The squads met in the first round of the NCAA tournament March 26, 2004 in Albany, N.Y. a 1-0 Badger win. Feb.11, 2006, the Buckeyes and Badgers played on Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., a 4-2 UW victory. Ohio State topped Wisconsin, 5-3, in the Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational Oct. 13, 2007 in Dayton, Ohio.
- The teams did not face off again until the Big Ten Conference added hockey. Last year, the squads split their two regular season series. In Madison Jan. 24-25, 2014, UW won the first game 5-3 before a 3-1 Buckeye victory in game two. In Columbus Feb. 14-15, 2014, Ohio State won the opener 2-1 and UW won game two, 4-2. The squads then met in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament championship game. Wisconsin came from behind to top the Buckeyes in overtime, 5-4.
- Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik was a four-year letterwinner at Wisconsin and was captain of the team’s 1990 NCAA championship squad.
The Last Time – Buckeyes vs. Badgers
- No. 4 seed Ohio State fell to No. 2 seed Wisconsin, 5-4, in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament championship game March 23, 2014 at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn.
- Ohio State led 2-1 after the first period on goals from Ryan Dzingel (4:51) and Nick Oddo (8:56), with Jake McCabe scoring on the power play for Wisconsin with just 23 seconds left in the period.
- Each team scored once in the second. Wisconsin tied the game at two with a goal at 11:24 on the power play, but Buckeye defenseman Clark Cristofoli tallied 1:16 later to put the Buckeyes back ahead (3-2).
- In the third, the Buckeyes took a 4-2 lead at 13:08 when Tanner Fritz tallied, but Wisconsin then scored twice in the next 48 seconds to deadlock the score at four. In overtime, Wisconsin’s Mark Zengerle netted the gamewinner at 7:48.
Badger Brief
- Wisconsin enters the series 2-18-4 overall and 0-8-2 in the Big Ten. Last weekend the squad was swept at Penn State, 5-2 and 4-1. In Big Ten play, the Badgers have two overtime tie/shootout wins vs. Minnesota (2-2 Jan. 16 in Minneapolis, 4-4 Jan. 31 in Madison).
- The Badgers are averaging 2.00 goals a game and allowing 4.08 a contest. The power play is 13-for-92 (.141) and the penalty kill is 67-for-91 (.736). Wisconsin averages 12.0 penalty minutes a night and puts 24.5 shots on goal per outing.
- Grant Besse leads Wisconsin with 18 points, nine goals and nine assists. Joseph LaBate and Morgan Zulinick are tied for second with eight assists and 13 points each. Jedd Soleway is second on the squad with six goals. In goal, Joel Rumpel has played in 22 games and has a 3.82 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.
Last Time Out
- Ohio State dropped two road games to Minnesota last week, falling 4-2 Friday and 6-2 Saturday in Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
- Game One (Minnesota 4, Ohio State 2): The Gophers had a 2-0 advantage after the opening period, with a power play goal at 6:00 and even strength tally at 15:33. The Buckeyes cut the Gopher lead to one (2-1) at 5:09 of the second when junior Anthony Greco tallied, assisted by Tanner Fritz and Sam Jardine. Travis Boyd put Minnesota back up by two with a power play goal at 8:19 and the Gophers added a goal at 11:10, just after a Minnesota power play expired, for a 4-1 advantage through two periods. The only goal of the third period came at 18:10 when Buckeye senior Nick Oddo scored unassisted. Minnesota outshot the Buckeyes, 42-23, in the game, including 20 second period attempts. Buckeye goalie Christian Frey made 38 saves in the Ohio State net. The Gophers, who entered the week first nationally on the power play, were 2-for-4 in the game, with Ohio State 0-for-2.
- Game Two (Minnesota 6, Ohio State 2): Minesota scored the first two goals of the game in the opening 7:01, scoring 30 seconds apart at 6:31 and 7:01. At 9:41, a dump-in from junior Sam Jardine bounced off the boards and behind the Gopher goalie to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes. Travis Boyd scored twice in the second, with goals at 9 seconds and 14:16, to push Minnesota ahead, 4-1. Minnesota added a power play goal 4:00 into the third period for a 5-1 lead. Buckeye freshman Victor Bjorkung tallied on the power play at 12:42 for a 5-2 game and Minnesota scored its third power play goal of the game at 15:01 for the 6-2 score. Minnesota had the advantage in shots, 28-18. Matt Tomkins had 22 saves for the Buckeyes. Ohio State converted 1-of-4 power play chances, with the Gophers 3-for-4.
B1G Banter
- All six Big Ten teams will be in conference series this weekend. In addition to the Buckeyes hosting Wisconsin, Michigan travels to Minnesota and Penn State plays at Michigan State.
- Each league team has played 10 games, hitting the midpoint of the B1G schedule. Michigan is 8-2-0 in league play to stand in first place with 24 points, with Penn State (7-2-1-0) two points back. Minnesota is in third with 18 points on a 5-2-3 record, with Michigan State fourth with 16 points and a 4-4-2-2 mark. Ohio State (2-8-0/6 points) and Wisconsin (0-8-2-2/4 points) are fifth and sixth.
- To close its 20-game B1G schedule, Ohio State has two-game series at home left with Wisconsin, Penn State and Minnesota, a home-and-home series with Michigan and two games at Wisconsin.
- In Big Ten play this year, teams receive three points for a win in regulation or overtime, two points for a shootout win, one point for a shootout loss and no points for a regulation or overtime loss.
- All six teams qualify for the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held March 19-21 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The tournament winner receives the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
