COLUMBUS, Ohio – Coach Urban Meyer, Ohio State president Michael V. Drake and 12 members of the 2014 College Football Playoff national championship Ohio State team spent about 90 minutes at the Ohio Statehouse Wednesday with Ohio Governor John Kasich and legislative chambers-full of enthusiastic and appreciative legislators from both the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives.
Governor Kasich spent nearly 30 minutes with the Ohio State contingent, telling them stories about the history of Ohio, including Abraham Lincoln sitting at the very same wooden desk in the office the players were in when he learned the U.S. House of Representatives had accepted the electoral college vote and that he was now the President of the United States.
The Governor also asked the players questions, including one to Steve Miller about what the interception return vs. Alabama was like:
“It was like playing catch,” Miller said. “He threw it right to me and then Doran Grant, Michael Bennett and Curtis Grant gave me some great blocks.”
And commenting on the way the team played selflessly and for each other this season, Governor Kasich told them how proud Ohio is of the team and how the team rallied from adversity and “lifted the entire state.”
Senate President Keith Faber also addressed the team in his office, telling them “you made Ohio proud. Wherever you are from, Ohio will always be your home.”
The team’s visit began with a session with Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger and later included receiving resolutions on both the House and Senate floors, and two standing ovations in the Senate.
