Last Time vs. Memphis
The last time Ohio State and Memphis faced off was March 24, 2007 in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas. The teams met in the 2007 NCAA South Regional Finals. The Buckeyes won 92-76 and were ranked No. 1 nationally. The Tigers entered the game at No. 5. The Buckeyes were led by 22 points from Ron Lewis, 19 from Mike Conley Jr., Greg Oden’s 17 and Jamar Butler’s 12 points. Ohio State scored on 35-of-41 free throws while shooting 51 percent from the field (26-51). Butler, Lewis and Conley Jr. combined to make 25-of-26 foul shots to help overcome 10-of-22 shooting by the Tigers from 3-point range. The Buckeyes led 41-38 at the half and then outscored Memphis 51-38 over the final 20 minutes to advance to the 2007 Final Four.
Scouting the Memphis Tigers
Three Memphis Tigers average 10 or more points a game heading into the matchup with the Buckeyes. Freshman guard Dedric Lawson leads the way with 14.8 ppg. He is followed by senior guard Ricky Tarrant Jr. (11.3 ppg.) and senior forward Trahson Burrell (10.0 ppg.). Senior forward Shaq Goodwin tops the squad with 9.8 rebounds a contest. The Tigers are 2-2 overall with wins over Southern Mississippi and Grambling State. Losses have come to then No. 8 Oklahoma and most recently to UT Arlington.
Ohio State vs. American Athletic Conference
Ohio State is 22-10 all-time vs. current members of The American Athletic Conference, including a 2-0 record vs. the University of Memphis. The Buckeyes and Tigers have not played since the 2007 NCAA Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. No. 1 Ohio State defeated No. 5 Memphis 92-76 to claim the 2007 South Regional Finals title and advance to the 2007 Final Four in Atlanta. The only other meeting between the schools occurred Dec. 3, 1959 in Columbus. Ohio State won that game 94-55. The last American Athletic Conference member to face Ohio State was Cincinnati March 22, 2012 in the NCAA East Regional in Boston. The Buckeyes won 81-66 before a 77-70 win over Syracuse in the regional finals. The Buckeyes advanced to the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans. The Buckeyes have played eight of the 12 American Athletic Conference members over the years. Ohio State has not met East Carolina, Southern Methodist, Temple and Tulane.
Havlicek Elected to Collegiate HOF
Ohio State great John Havlicek, who starred for the Buckeyes from 1960-62 and then went on to win eight NBA Championships with the Boston Celtics, was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Nov. 20 in Kansas City. Clark Kellogg, another Ohio State basketball standout, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Clark Kellogg is the lead studio analyst for CBS Sports’ coverage of college basketball, including the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Havlicek, a 1962 All-American under Coach Fred Taylor at Ohio State, helped the Buckeyes win the NCAA title in 1960. He went on to play his entire 16-year professional career with the Boston Celtics, winning eight NBA championships and earning 13 All-Star selections. Named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players, Havlicek was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.
