MADISON, Wis. – Ohio State’s victory over Wisconsin earlier this season (Sept. 27) was avenged on Sunday when the 10th-ranked Badgers (22-6, 14-4 Big Ten) triumphed inside the UW Field House by the final score of 25-21, 25-16, 25-21. The No. 16 Buckeyes move to 11-7 in conference play and 22-8 overall.
Valeria León tacked on 16 more digs to her career total, which now reaches 1,193 and ranks ninth in Ohio State history. Taylor Sandbothe continued her climb up the all-time record books as well with three more blocks. She now ranks eighth all-time with 397 stuffs.
Sandbothe paired with fellow middle blocker Tyler Richardson for 17 kills and a combined hitting efficiency of .432 (17-1-37). Sandbothe bounced nine kills at a .364 pace while Richardson was responsible for eight terminations and a .533 hitting percentage.
Audra Appold started off hot with a half dozen kills in the opening frame to aid Ohio State in a 12-9 early edge. Five of the next six tallies went to the Badgers, though, and Wisconsin grabbed the lead at 14-13. The advantage then swung back in favor of OSU at 15-14 following an Appold kill. A three-point Badger run followed, however, lifting UW on top for good in a 25-21 final ledger.
Elizabeth Campbell stepped up in set number two, carrying the OSU offense with 12 put-aways on 15 attempts with a lone error (.400). The entire Badger offense matched Campbell’s efforts and made a late surge to close it out, 25-16. Ohio State trailed by just two points at 16-14 but fell victim to a set-ending 9-2 burst thereafter.
Ohio State built up five blocks in the third frame, to limit Wisconsin at a .139 attacking effort. The defensive effort on the other side of the net was identical, however, as the Buckeyes were stuffed five times and swung at an identical .139 clip. The lone meaningful difference statistically was a pair of service aces for Wisconsin, the second of which ruined Ohio State’s final lead of the day and evened the score at 20-all. The Badgers would go on to seize five of the next six to close the door, 25-21.
The Scarlet & Gray travel to Minneapolis midweek for its final road match of the 2015 regular season, taking on the Golden Gophers Wednesday (Nov. 25) in an 8 p.m. ET match-up. Ohio State then hosts Rutgers for Senior Night on Saturday (Nov. 28) at 7 p.m. inside St. John Arena.
