FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Friday wasn’t the best of days for the Ohio State men’s tennis team at the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships as Hugo Di Feo, Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen all fell in their round of 16 matches.
Di Feo faced No. 70 Joao P. Monteiro of Virginia Tech on Friday morning. He fell behind early and lost the first set 6-2. He battled in the second before dropping that set 7-5. It was still an impress fall for Di Feo as he advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship and holds a 7-2 record.
Torpegaard jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set over No. 22 Andre Goransson of California and would hold on for a 6-4 victory. But Goransson got back on track in the second set and would take the final two sets 6-3, 6-2. Torpegaard was 6-2 in his eight matches this fall.
Pollanen came into the weekend as one of the hottest Buckeyes but his run was halted by Georgia Tech’s No. 24 Chris Eubanks on Friday 7-5, 6-2. He led the Buckeyes this fall with an 8-2 mark.
Senior Chris Diaz, who was bounced into the consolation bracket after an opening round loss on Thursday, took on TCU Guillermo Nunez. Diaz lost the first set 6-2 and took the second set into a tie-breaker. He dominated the breaker, winning it 7-0 but Nunez recovered and won the deciding set 6-4.
The Buckeyes will open the team portion of the schedule on January 20, 2016 with matches against Dayton and Xavier.
