COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s hockey team will host Canisius this weekend in Value City Arena in Columbus. The Buckeyes (1-7-0, 0-0-0 B1G) and Golden Griffins (2-5-0, 2-2-0 AHA) will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
The series marks the Buckeyes final home games of the 2015 calendar year; the squad will next play in VCA Jan. 15, 2016 vs. Michigan.

Military Appreciation, Script Ohio, Postgame Skate
• Military Appreciation Night is slated for Friday. Fans with military IDs will receive the group rate for tickets for themselves and their friends and family at the arena box office on game night. Fans with military IDs will also receive 10 percent off at concession stands.
• Following the Friday game, youth eighth grade and under are invited down to the ice to take a shot on the VCA goal. Children can reach ice level using the stairs by section 124 following the conclusion of play. No skates needed – carpets will be laid out on the ice to shoot from.
• Script Ohio on Ice will be performed for the first time this season during the first intermission of the Buckeyes’ game vs. Canisius Saturday.
• Family Four packs, which include four tickets, four hot dogs, four small sodas and four small popcorns for $36 (plus service fee), will be available for the Saturday tilt. The package can only be purchased online prior to game night.
• Postgame Saturday, all fans are invited onto the Value City Arena ice for a skate. Fans must bring their own skates; no skates will be available to rent.

Buckeyes vs. Golden Griffins
• Ohio State and Canisius are meeting for the third year in a row, with the Buckeyes 3-0-1 all-time vs. the Golden Griffins.
• The squads first met Nov. 15-16, 2013 in Columbus, a Buckeye sweep with 3-0 and 3-1 wins. Last year in Buffalo, the teams tied the opener 3-3 before a 4-1 Ohio State win in game two.
Ohio State vs. Canisius in 2014-15
• Ohio State was 1-0-1 at Canisius Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2014, in the first games at Buffalo’s HarborCenter. The Buckeyes rallied for a 3-3 overtime tie with the Golden Griffins Friday and then posted a 4-1 win Saturday.
• Game 1: Ohio State 3, Canisius 3 OT: Ohio State rallied for a 3-3 overtime tie against Canisius Oct. 31, 2014 in the inaugural game in HarborCenter. The Buckeyes trailed 2-0 on two early first period goals in the first 1:49 of the game, but Matt Johnson and Luke Stork scored in the second period for a 2-2 game after 40 minutes. Canisius went ahead 3-2 at 13:23 of the third, but David Gust tallied at 15:59 to deadlock the score at three. Neither team was able to score in overtime. Buckeye goalie Matt Tomkins made 26 saves on 27 shots in relief. The teams were unable to score on the power play – Ohio State was 0-for-6 and Canisius was 0-for-4.
• Game 2: Ohio State 4, Canisius 1: The line of Nick Oddo, Chad Niddery and Kevin Miller posted nine points to lead Ohio State to a 4-1 win over Canisius Nov. 1, 2014. The Buckeyes were ahead 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Oddo and Darik Angeli made it 2-0 in the second period. In the third, Oddo netted his second of the night and Miller tallied just 29 seconds later for a 4-0 Ohio State lead. Canisius scored a shorthanded goal at 15:34 for the final goal. Tomkins had 20 saves on 21 shots. The teams were again scoreless on the power play, with Ohio State 0-for-3 and Canisius 0-for-4.
Golden Griffin Gossip
• Canisius is 2-5-0 on the year and coming off a 3-2 loss at home vs. Merrimack last Saturday. The team last played a conference series Oct. 30-31, splitting a series at Sacred Heart with a 3-0 win and 4-0 loss.
• The Golden Griffins are averaging 1.86 goals a game and allowing 3.43 a contest. The power play is 3-for-18 (.167) and the penalty kid is 17-for-23 (.739). Canisius averages 10.9 penalty minutes per game.
• Shane Conacher has a team-best four goals and eight points, tying Ralph Cuddemi, who is second with seven points, with four assists. In goal, Reilly Turner has played six games and has a 3.88 goals-against average and .892 save percentage, with a 2-4-0 ledger. Simon Hofley is 0-1-0 in three games, with a 2.17 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.
• Canisius is a member of Atlantic Hockey Association, where it is joined by Air Force, American International, Army West Point, Bentley, Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, Niagara, RIT, Robert Morris and Sacred Heart.
A Buckeye at the Helm
• Canisius is coached by former Buckeye Dave Smith. He was a four-year letterwinner for Ohio State from 1989-92 and posted 140 points, with 57 goals and 83 assists, in 126 career games, ranking 22nd in program history in career points. He was the Team MVP and led the squad in scoring in 1992 with 63 points, including a team-best 41 assists (the seventh-highest total for a single-season in program history).
• After graduating from Ohio State, Smith spent six years playing professional hockey, including five full years in the AHL.
• Smith, who also spent time coaching at Mercyhurst, Bowling Green and Miami, is in his 11th season at the helm of the Golden Griffins and led the squad to its first conference title and NCAA appearance in 2013.
Last Time Out
• Ohio State split a series with Mercyhurst Oct. 30-31 in Value City Arena. The Lakers claimed game one, 2-1, before a 5-1 Buckeye victory in game two.
• Game 1: Mercyhurst 2, Ohio State 1: Ohio State fell to Mercyhurst, 2-1, Oct. 30. in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Nick Schilkey and outshot the Lakers 12-4 in the period. In the second, Mercyhurst tied the game just 58 seconds into the stanza and then took the lead at 15:14 with a shorthanded goal. Ohio State had 14 shots in both the second and third periods, holding Mercyhurst to five and seven, respectively, and outshot the Lakers 40-16 for the game. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play.
• Game 2: Ohio State 5, Mercyhurst 1: In game two, Ohio State posted a 5-1 win. The Buckeyes again led 1-0 after the first period on a Schilkey goal, this time on the power play. Ohio State’s Luke Stork scored 24 seconds into the second period for a 2-0 lead and freshman John Wiitala made it a three-goal advantage at 5:08. Schilkey netted his second of the game at 12:39 for a 4-0 Buckeye lead. In the third, Matthew Weis scored on the power play to push the lead to five. The Lakers broke up the shutout at 8:39 of the third period. Ohio State outshot Mercyhurst, 52-28, in the game. The Buckeyes were 2-for-6 on the power play and held the Lakers scoreless on three chances.
