COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics is proud to partner in the College Football Playoff Foundation’s “Extra Yard for Teachers” program. Ohio State, with the assistance of the 2nd & 7 Foundation, presented Sara Ryder’s second-grade classroom at Como Elementary in Columbus with full-funding for an engineering and literacy project at a surprise ceremony Thursday afternoon.
As a member of the inaugural College Football Playoff, Ohio State was given the opportunity to fund a project for a school in need with the assistance of the CFP Foundation. At Como, Ryder plans to use the funding as an extension of her reading and science lessons. The classroom curriculum includes an extensive fairy tales and fables unit, in which students read classic children’s stories, including Goldilocks, The Three Little Pigs, and Three Billy Goats Gruff. Funding will help extend students’ learning by allowing them to try their hand at creating the three bears’ chairs, the three little pigs’ houses and the trolls’ bridge, among other things. Students will work in a collaborative environment to design, create and problem solve.
“Extra Yard for Teachers” has become the primary philanthropic cause of the CFP Foundation, the charitable arm of the College Football Playoff. The initiative strives to provide direct resources to classrooms, recognize outstanding educators, aid in professional development and leadership training and inspire a college-going culture.
The 2nd & 7 Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Columbus, was identified by Ohio State as the organization to execute the gift. Founded in 1999 by former Ohio State football players Ryan Miller, Luke Fickell and Mike Vrabel, 2nd & 7 promotes reading in Central Ohio schools by providing free books and positive role models to children in need while encouraging young athletes to pay forward. Ohio State student-athletes have been long-time supporters of the foundation and its work in Central Ohio schools in a volunteer capacity.
The presentation took place in conjunction with “Extra Yard for Teachers” Awareness Week (Oct. 5-10). For more information, visit http://www.collegefootballplayoff.com/eyft-awareness-week.
