COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 4-0 win over Brock in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon in Value City Arena in Columbus. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the second before pulling away with two goals in the third.
Sophomores Luke Stork and Matthew Weis led the Buckeyes with a goal and an assist each, while freshman Freddy Gerard and sophomore Nicholas Jones also scored. Junior goalies Christian Frey (nine saves) and Matt Tomkins (six saves) combined for the shutout.
“First and foremost, it was nice to go out and play against somebody else,” Steve Rohlik, Ohio State head coach, said. “It was nice to see nine new guys get their feet wet out there and we played a lot of bodies. We made a lot of mistakes but I think it was more jittery-type mistakes and we have this week to correct some things and get ready for the real season.”
The regular season begins next week, with the Buckeyes facing Bowling Green in a home-and-home series. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday in Columbus and at 7:37 p.m. Saturday in Bowling Green.
The Buckeyes got on the board at 9:21 of the first period when Gerard scored, assisted by Weis and freshman Tommy Parran. Shots were 11-7 in favor of the Buckeyes in the period. In the second, Stork tallied at 16:19, with assists from sophomore Christian Lampasso and freshman Mason Jobst. Ohio State had 20 shots in the second period, holding the Badgers to three.

The Buckeyes converted their fifth power play opportunity of the game when Weis tallied, as junior Nick Schilkey found him at the far side with the net open. Senior Tyler Lundey had the second assist on the goal, which came at 19:06. The Buckeyes outshot the Badgers, 12-5, in the period.
“It was a good game for us but we can definitely get better,” Josh Healey, junior defenseman, said. “In the first game of the year there are going to be some mistakes and things we need to correct but overall I think we did a good job of keeping them off the scoreboard and we didn’t spend too much time in our own end.”
For the game, Ohio State outshot Brock, 43-15. Frey started for the Buckeyes and had nine saves in 29:34, while Tomkins made six saves in 30:26.
Ohio State was 1-for-5 on the power play in the game and held Brock scoreless on three chances.
