COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11 Ohio State University women’s volleyball team started off the second half of the Big Ten slate by dropping just its fourth match overall on the season, a three-set defeat to No. 3 Penn State (25-18, 25-15, 25-17)). The Buckeyes move to 19-4 overall and 8-3 in conference action. These two teams meet up for a rematch on Friday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m. in State College.
The entire 14-member roster saw action in the contest, including a 10.5 point effort from Elizabeth Campbell. She added eight digs as well to her nine kills, ace and block assist. Tyler Richardson found some success as well with five kills on 12 swings and a pair of block assists. Valeria León paced all comers with a match-high 11 digs.
Penn State (20-2, 9-2 Big Ten) launched the opening serve deep before ripping off eight consecutive tallies, racing out to an 8-1 edge. The Buckeyes scratched and clawed their way out of an 11-point hole at 13-2 and closed within three points at 18-15 by virtue of a 13-5 run. The valiant comeback ultimately ran out of steam, however, and the Nittany Lions snagged the first frame, 25-18.
Set number two got started with back-to-back Buckeyes kills from Campbell and Audra Appold. Moments later it was consecutive Buckeye blocks which pushed OSU ahead by a set-high three-point margin (8-5). Following five in a row from the Lions, Ohio State immediately pushed back to make it 12-all. Penn State’s subsequent counter went unmatched though and PSU took it 25-15.
Despite a half dozen kills from Campbell in the third set alone, Ohio State couldn’t muster a comeback. The Nittany Lions pulled away at 9-4 and never look back in the match-clinching 25-17 winner.
Friday’s match at Penn State will be broadcast live by BTN Plus.
