TULSA, Okla. – Ohio State sophomore Mikael Torpegaard made the most of his second chance as he won the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The win earns Torpegaard a spot in the ITA Intercollegiate National Championships next month in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Monday’s final was a Big Ten Showdown between Torpegaard and Northwestern’s Sam Shropshipe. The two split a pair of meetings last year leading into what will likely be the first of a number of battles this year. Torpegaard got the first break of the match in the fifth game and took a 4-2 lead after his serve. Both players held serve from there and the Denmark native took the first set 6-4.
Shropshire got his first break at 3-1 in the second set but Torpegaard responded right back with a break of his own to get back on serve. It stayed that way until Torpegaard collected his third break of the contest to go ahead 5-4 and then held serve on love with a nice backhand winner down the line to win the set and the match 6-4.
Torpegaard never lost a set in his five victory-run through the consolation bracket. He shook off the disappointment of the opening round singles loss on Thursday and continued his run with doubles partner Herkko Pollanen. The two won their way through the qualifier and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw before bowing out.
Next up for Torpegaard and the Buckeyes will be the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in South Bend, Ind., beginning on Oct. 22. Torpegaard enters the tournament as the defending singles champion as he claimed the title last year as a freshman.
