Athletes of the Week
Ezekiel Elliott, football
- Elliott rushed for 230 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns against top-ranked Alabama, breaking the Sugar Bowl record for rushing yards in a game. He also became the first player to rush for 100 yards against the Crimson Tide this season. It was the eighth 100-yard game of the season for Elliott and the ninth of his career.
Kelsey Mitchell, women’s basketball
- Freshman sensation Kelsey Mitchell was special again vs. 16th-ranked Rutgers, coming up with big plays when the Buckeyes needed it most. She finished with game highs of 33 points and six assists. It marked her third 30-point game of the year. Mitchell also led Ohio State with 23 points and five assists against No. 25 Northwestern.
No. 4 Football (13-1, 8-0 B1G)
- Cardale Jones turned in another savvy performance in his second college start Thursday night, leading the football team to a 42-35 upset of No. 1 Alabama in the second semifinal of the College Football Playoff at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
- The win puts the Buckeyes in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship game vs. No. 2 Oregon Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in North Texas. Women’s Basketball (10-5, 2-1 B1G)
- The women’s basketball team claimed a pair of wins over ranked opponents – No. 16 Rutgers and No. 25 Northwestern. The Buckeyes rolled past the Scarlet Knights 85-68 Thursday afternoon before defeating the Wildcats 73-64 Sunday at Value City Arena.
- The Buckeyes have won six of their last seven games and three of their last four games against ranked opponents.
Men’s Hockey (6-9-2, 1-2-0-0 B1G)
- Led by a hat trick from senior Matt Johnson, the men’s hockey team skated to a 6-3 win over Mercyhurst Friday at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa.
- The Buckeyes returned to the ice Saturday, skating to a 2-2 overtime tie vs. the Lakers behind goals from Johnson and junior Anthony Greco.
Women’s Hockey (12-8-2, 7-7-2-1 WCHA)
- The women’s hockey team recorded its largest margin of victory this season in a 6-0 win over Penn State Sunday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.
- The victory completed a series sweep of the Nittany Lions, as the Buckeyes posted a 3-1 win on Saturday.
- Freshmen Julianna Iafallo, Dani Sadek and Haley Studler earned their first collegiate goals in the series, while fellow rookie Kassidy Sauve registered 23 stops in her fourth shutout in goal for the Buckeyes.
No. 20 Men’s Basketball (12-3, 1-1 B1G)
- D’Angelo Russell scored 22 points, including eight during a decisive 15-0 second-half run, to lead the men’s basketball team past Illinois 77-61 on Saturday at Value City Arena.
No. 14 Men’s Volleyball (2-0, 2-0 MIVA)
- The Buckeyes secured a pair of four-set wins over McKendree University on back-to-back days inside St. John Arena to open the 2015 campaign.
- Sophomore setter Christy Blough averaged just under 12 assists per set, steering the OSU offense to a .494 attacking rate (55-13-85).
