Ohio State Skates to 3-1 Win Over Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team posted a 3-1 win Saturday evening in its first visit to Pegula Ice Arena on the campus of Penn State University. Sophomore Haley Studler earned two goals in the third period to fuel the Buckeye victory, while her classmate Claudia Kepler sealed the win with an empty netter in the final minute. The Buckeyes (11-8-2, 8-7-2-1 WCHA) and Nittany Lions (10-8-3, 5-5-1 CHA) will return to the ice for the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
The teams were scoreless in the first and second periods of play with shots serving in Ohio State’s favor, 17-7. Redshirt junior Stacy Danczak started in goal for the Scarlet and Gray, registering seven saves in the opening two stanzas.
Studler gave the Buckeyes a one-goal lead 3:24 into the third period. The goal, assisted by sophomore Katie Matheny and junior Maggie Rothgery, was the first of the Grosse Isle, Manitoba native’s collegiate career. Less than four minutes later, Studler answered the call again, notching her second goal off a feed from senior Taylor Kuehl and sophomore Alexa Ranahan. Penn State fought back with a power-play goal from Hannah Bramm, cutting the Buckeye lead to one. Kepler, however, shut down the come back with an empty net goal at 19:39. Senior Kari Schmitt assisted Kepler on the play.
Danczak recorded eight saves for the Buckeyes in 60 minutes. With the win, Danczak moves to 5-1-2 so far this season. Celine Whitlinger played 59:24 for the Nittany Lions, contributing 32 saves. The Buckeyes ended the game with a 35-9 advantage in shots.
