Athletes of the Week
Kari Schmitt, women’s hockey
- Schmitt, a senior defenseman, sparked the Buckeye offense in its series sweep of St. Cloud State. In game one, she propelled Ohio State to a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the first period of play. She followed it up in game two with a two-goal performance, contributing to the Scarlet and Gray’s sixth-consecutive road win.
Kenny Courts, wrestling
- Holding a precarious 16-12 lead over third-ranked and defending national champion Penn State, Courts picked up a key 4-2 decision at 184 pounds to give Ohio State a 19-12 advantage. The redshirt junior’s victory came on the strength of an escape to start the third period, a takedown with 1:40 left and over two of riding time.
No. 7 Wrestling (5-3, 1-1 B1G)
- The seventh-ranked wrestling team won six of 10 matches, including momentum-swinging wins at 184 and 197 pounds, to knock off Penn State on Sunday in front of 6,109 fans at St. John Arena.
- The win marked Ohio State’s first over Penn State since 2010 and the highest-ranked opponent Ohio State has downed since a 21-9 victory over second-ranked Iowa on Jan. 20, 2012.
Women’s Basketball (11-6, 3-2 B1G)
- The women’s basketball team came out firing early and never looked back as it blew past Indiana Thursday night 103-49 in Assembly Hall.
- The 103 points were the most Ohio State has scored in a Big Ten contest since it posted 105 points in a 105-68 victory over Northwestern on Feb. 9, 1996.
Track & Field
- The track and field team opened its 2015 season Friday afternoon as hosts of the Buckeye Classic at French Field House.
- The Buckeye men recorded victories in seven events, while redshirt sophomore Donovan Robertson posted the top 60-meter hurdle time in Division I this season with his second-place time of 7.76 seconds.
- On the women’s side, Ohio State championed eight events, including a win from junior Alyssa Gary, who claimed shot put with a personal-best mark of 14.73m (48-4.00).
No. 10 Women’s Hockey (14-8-2, 9-7-2 WCHA)
- The 10th-ranked women’s hockey team earned its seventh shutout of the season in a 4-0 blanking of St. Cloud State Saturday evening in St. Cloud, Minn. With the victory, the Buckeyes completed a series sweep of the Huskies after recording a 3-1 win on Friday.
- Moving to 7-1-1 in its last nine contests, the pair of wins gives Ohio State its longest road win streak in program history. The Buckeyes last conquered four in a row during the 2010-11 campaign.
Men’s Hockey (7-10-2, 2-3-0-0 B1G)
- Junior Anthony Greco’s goal in overtime lifted the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 5-4 victory at Penn State in a Big Ten Conference game Friday in Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.
- The line of freshmen Luke Stork and Christian Lampasso and senior Nick Oddo led the Buckeyes in the win, coming up with three goals and seven points.
No. 18 Women’s Gymnastics (1-0)
- The 18th-ranked women’s gymnastics team opened the 2015 season with a 194.675-190.825 win at Pittsburgh Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
No. 22 Men’s Basketball (13-4, 2-2 B1G)
- Sophomore Marc Loving’s jumper from the lane with 5.6 seconds left in overtime lifted the 22nd-ranked men’s basketball team to a 74-72 victory over Minnesota on Tuesday night.
No. 14 Men’s Volleyball (3-2, 2-0 MIVA)
- The 14th-ranked men’s volleyball team kicked off a three-match west coast swing with a four-set win over Cal Baptist on Wednesday. The win gave Ohio State its first 3-0 start since 2007.
