Ohio State Drops Decision at No. 5 Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

MADISON, Wis. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) decision to No. 5 Wisconsin (10-2, 1-1 B1G) Sunday afternoon on the road. With the loss, the Buckeyes move to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in B1G play this season.
Junior Katie Mitchell led the Scarlet and Gray with nine kills and two blocks in the Buckeye effort. Taylor Sherwin added 23 assists, while Alyssa Winner tallied a team-high 18 digs.
Wisconsin’s Courtney Thomas led all players with 11 kills and three blocks in the match while Dominique Thompson added 10 kills along with three blocks for the Badgers. Freshman Kelli Bates collected 22 digs in the conference competition.
A kill by Erin Sekinger evened the score at 3-all before the Badgers pushed ahead with a 6-1 run early in the first set. Following another Wisconsin surge, three kills by Mitchell and a service ace from Elizabeth Campbell pushed the score to 23-19 before a Wisconsin kill closed out the set, 25-19.
The two squads began the second set exchanging points until the Badgers mounted a 6-1 run to move ahead in the set, 8-4. Back-to-back kills from Kylie Randall closed the gap to 10-8 until another run by the Badgers forced an Ohio State timeout trailing 16-11. Luisa Schirmer tallied a kill and service ace to slow down the Wisconsin attack and bring the score to 21-17 late in the set. The Buckeyes would ultimately dropped the second set though, 25-19.
Following the intermission, Wisconsin jumped ahead to an 11-1 lead and another major run lifted the home team ahead to a 17-6 advantage vs. the Buckeyes. Following a kill from Campbell, Tyler Richardson and Mitchell teamed up for a Buckeye block to bring the score to 17-8 before the Badgers rallied to clinch the match, 25-17.
Up next, the Buckeyes will continue B1G competition on the road, facing Iowa Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
