OHIO STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
J.T. Barrett, redshirt freshman quarterback
On the differences between this week and last week
“Virginia Tech pushed us to throw the ball downfield and came in with things we haven’t seen before. We didn’t adjust very well. This week, we stuck with our game plan and it worked out for us.”
On progressing in his position
“I feel like I’m progressing each week. I’m just trying to get better each week. I definitely feel more comfortable every week as I get more reps. Things are starting to slow down for me in the game.”
Raekwon McMillan, freshman linebacker
On the defensive shutout vs. Kent State
“It was a great day of defense for our guys. Moving forward, we have to make sure that we execute and are perfect in everything we do.”
On becoming comfortable with the Buckeye playbook
“I practice hard for the games during the week so the game will be easy. I learned from what the guys around me are doing, so I feel like I can play more loose now.”
Michael Thomas, sophomore wide receiver
On his relationship with quarterback J.T. Barrett
“J.T. is a real mature guy. We hold each other accountable and trust each other. I trust him and tell him I’ve always got his back out there.”
On the Buckeyes mindset versus the Golden Flashes
“We came out hard, stuck to our assignments and got the job done. It was a great experience with a great crowd out there and they helped us.”
Jalin Marshall, freshman halfback
On his growth
“I’ve had some injuries and setbacks, but the journey is worth it. This is a great university and crowd to play for. I feel great being able to get in the end zone and help my team every week.”
On the Buckeye attitude this week
“I think we were very hungry. We wanted to come and get a win. We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish as far as competiveness and getting this win. I don’t think everything’s fine or fixed. We have a lot to work on, and as we grow as a team, we’ll continue to get better.”
Devin Smith, senior wide receiver
On the Buckeye’s wide receiver rotation
“We have people playing multiple positions, like myself, Evan [Spencer], and a few other guys that can play. I think it’s great to have a rotation to keep guys fresh and keep the offense fast.”
On growing from the loss vs. Virginia Tech
“On Sunday, we forgot about it and got to work. Coach Meyer just told us to get that taste out of our mouth and keep working.”
Billy Price, freshman right guard
On the play of the offensive line
“Our preparation was better. We didn’t under estimate [Kent State] by any means and we came with the right attitude this week. Nothing is going to be given to us, and we just wanted to come in and do our job.”
“We have to get better as a whole. From this week to last week, I think we got better and we need to keep focusing on building.”
Pat Elfein, sophomore left guard
“We practiced the defense that Virginia Tech threw at us unexpectedly and extended that defense against Kent State. We practiced that this week and executed this week way better.”
On Ohio State’s fast start
“It got our confidence up right away. Putting points on the board early in the game definitely helped our momentum and things kept rolling.”
KENT STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Paul Haynes, Kent State Head Coach
On moving forward after today’s game
“We knew we had to play our best football to beat them, and we didn’t do that. So we’ll go back to the drawing board, fight like crazy, take the bye week to get ready for Virginia, then get ready for the MAC, to be MAC champs.”
On what the team can take away from today
“I think that any time you can step on the field, every game you play, I told these guys, it shapes you. Just like when you go through adversity, it shapes you. We’ll watch it, we’ll learn from it, and we’ll move forward.”
On pulling RB Nick Holley early in the game
“We need to get our backups some reps. It’s a long season, and we need to have our backups ready, and this is the type of game where you can do that. You get the ball in [Holley’s] hands and he can make things happen. He’s still young, but I think he is going to be a very good back in our league.”
Nate Holley, sophomore safety
On maintaining a positive attitude
“It’s a hard thing to do, especially for me personally. I have a couple plays I wish I could take back, so it is hard to keep everybody up and excited, but that is what we tried to do to the best of our ability.”
On focusing on fundamentals
You have to give [the Buckeyes] credit, but fundamentally we weren’t sound. There were certain things we needed to do that we didn’t do. They throw stiff arms out there and if you don’t break the stiff arm down before you made the tackle, you miss the tackle. It was partly on us for our fundamentals, but then again we were playing some good athletes. “
