Athletes of the Week
Ezekiel Elliott, football
- Elliott scored untouched on a 44-yard run on fourth-and-1 with 4:58 left to help Ohio State beat Michigan 42-28 on Saturday. The 44-yard touchdown was the longest run allowed by the Wolverines this season. He rushed for 121 yards in the win, his seventh career 100-yard game and sixth this season.
Luisa Schirmer, women’s volleyball
- Schirmer recorded back-to-back double-doubles in Ohio State’s final two regular season matches of the season, leading the Buckeyes to a five-set win vs. Minnesota on Senior Night and a sweep of Rutgers on the road to cap the regular season.
Football (11-1, 8-0 B1G)
- No. 6 Ohio State topped rival Michigan 42-28 on Saturday in Columbus. Ohio Stadium, leading the nation in average home attendance, packed in a facility-record 108,610 people for the matchup.
Women’s Volleyball (21-11, 12-8 B1G)
- The 20th-ranked women’s volleyball team went five rounds with Minnesota for the second time in as many scuffles this season, knocking out the Golden Gophers 25-21, 28-26, 27-29, 13-25, 15-8 Wednesday on Senior Night. The squad capped its regular season by beating Rutgers on the road with a score of 75-48 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17).
- The program qualified for its 20th NCAA Tournament, receiving an at-large bid to the 2014 postseason. The Buckeyes will be sent to Lexington, Ky., for a first round match-up against Lipscomb University (21-8).
Men’s Basketball (5-0)
- Marc Loving scored a career-high 18 points and four teammates joined him in double figures as the 16th-ranked men’s basketball team defeated Campbell 91-64 on Wednesday night.
- The Buckeyes followed it up Friday with a 73-56 win over James Madison. Senior Sam Thompson led Ohio State with 13 points and six rebounds.
Wrestling (4-1)
- No. 4 Ohio State won eight of 10 matches, highlighted by a pin from redshirt senior Logan Stieber and a major decision by true freshman Kyle Snyder, to defeat No. 9 Virginia, 30-7, on Monday evening at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.
- The win snapped Virginia’s 23-match win streak at JPJ Arena.
Women’s Basketball (4-3)
- Freshman Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 of her season-high 35 points in the second half to help lead the women’s basketball team to an 86-77 comeback victory over Clemson Thursday in the first game of the 2014 Paradise Jam.
- Moving on to its third game in three days, the short-handed Buckeyes gutted-out a 90-83 double-overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast in the finale of the tournament. Ohio State finished the 2014 Paradise Jam with a record of 2-1.
Men’s Hockey (5-8-1, 1-1-0 B1G)
- With points from 10 players, including two goals by Tanner Fritz and three assists from Nick Schilkey, the men’s hockey team skated to a 5-1 win at Notre Dame Saturday in the third-place game of the Shillelagh Tournament.
Women’s Hockey (8-7-1, 5-6-1 WCHA)
- The women’s hockey team downed Robert Morris by a score of 5-1 Friday evening in 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Senior Kayla Sullivan led the Scarlet and Gray with three points on two goals and an assist.
