Barrett a semifinalist for Davey O’Brien Award – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State red-shirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett has been named today one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
Barrett, who took over the starting quarterback responsibilities in mid-August after sitting out last season, has led Ohio State to a 7-1 record and a 4-0 mark in the Big Ten Conference with his excellent play each week this season that has resulted in four Big Ten freshman of the week awards, two Big Ten offensive player of the week awards and one national freshman of the week award.
The Big Ten Conference’s leader in total offense (294.0 yards per game) and passing efficiency (170.0), Barrett also is among the national leaders in a handful of categories. For instance:
He ranks third nationally in points responsible for per game(21.8); Fourth in passing efficiency (170.0); Fourth in pointsresponsible for (174); Eighth in touchdown passes (23); and 23rd intotal offense (294.0 yards per game).
Barrett, the lone freshman among the semifinalists, has accounted for 25 touchdowns during Ohio State’s current six-game winning streak, including 22 passing TDs. He has completed 113 of 163 passes (69.3 pct.) for 1,411 yards with just three interceptions the last six games.
The Wichita Falls, Texas, native has completed at least 70 percent of his passes in four of eight games and he has a high game of 330 passing yards (vs. Cincinnati), 409 total yards (also vs. UC) and six passing touchdowns (vs. Kent State) this season.
After clearing the first round voting totals, the Fan Vote at VoteOBrien.org reopens today and will remain open until noon (CT) on Sunday, Nov. 23, for the second round of balloting. Fans are invited to cast their vote for the nation’s best college quarterback as often as once daily per email address.
The Fan Vote counts as five percent during each round of the voting process, and is combined with the results from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, which is comprised of journalists, broadcasters, commentators and former winners.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation and the Selection Committee will release the names of the three finalists on Monday, Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11.
