COLUMBUS–In the opening three games of the 2014-15 season, Ohio State senior Shannon Scott has handed out 10 or more assists in three-consecutive games. In the last two games he has dished out 14 and 16 assists to earn Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors in the Big Ten.
Scott’s 30 assists last week led to his teammates scoring 71 points. He scored 19 points as well last week to account for 90 of 180 points scored by the Buckeyes.
Scott has set career highs in helpers each time out this year with 11 assists in the season opener vs. UMass -Lowell, 14 vs. Marquette and an Ohio State record 16 assists vs. Sacred Heart Sunday. His 41 assists rate No. 2 in the country in total assists behind D.J. Cole of Youngstown State, who has handed out 42 assists on the year, in six games. Scott is the national leader in assists per game with 13.7, a full three assists per game more than Brett Comer of Florida Gulf Coast, who has averaged 10.7 helpers over his first three games this season.
Scott also has set Ohio State records for consecutive games with 10 or more assists (3) and the highest assist total over three consecutive games (41) and in back to back games (30). In his career, Scott has 362 assists. He needs 12 to earn a spot in the Top 10 all-time at Ohio State behind the 374 assists handed out by both Brian Brown (1999-02) and most recently by David Lighty (2007-11).
In Big Ten history, Scott’s 16 assists vs. Sacred Heart is tied for the No. 4 spot all-time with four others, most recently by Demetri McCamey of Illinois vs. Purdue (1/12/94).
