COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Rifle Team fired a 4647 to defeat in-state rival Akron (4603) and NC State (4572) on Saturday at Akron. The 4647 was the second highest road score of the season and fourth highest overall.
In smallbore, the Buckeyes fired a 2303 led by a personal and team season best 588 performance by freshman Mark Matheny. Rounding out the team scoring for Ohio State was sophomore Deanna Binnie (573), junior Remington Lyman (572), freshman Drew Cheezum (570) and sophomore Anthony Cuozzo (568). Firing as an individual, sophomore Kendal Elder fired a 575 which was her best score as a Buckeye.
In air rifle, Ohio State fired a 2344 led by sophomore Anthony Cuozzo who fired a season best 587. Following Cuozzo was a solid overall team performance with Cheezum and Lyman both firing 586 and Matheny firing a 585. Firing as individuals, Josh Black led the way with a 587 followed by a 582 from junior Alex Kimura and a season best 580 from Elder.
“Coming off of our season best last week it was good to be able to go on the road to Akron and put up our second highest away score of the season,” head coach Ryan Tanoue said. “We also saw a personal best and team season best smallbore score from Mark whose 588 is one of the highest scores fired in the country this season. We also had season-best performances from both Anthony and Kendal which was great to see especially since this was the first time seeing Akron’s updated range for nearly the entire team.”
“Our overall team performance in air rifle was also the best that we have had during my tenure with eight of our nine team members firing a 580 or higher. Although the end of the semester is just a few weeks away, we still have another fantastic opportunity to post a score that will improve our average at Air Force in two weeks and we’ll definitely be taking advantage of the Thanksgiving break and will be rested and ready to compete in Colorado Springs on December 4th.”
Ohio State will be off for the Thanksgiving weekend and will return to action December 4th against Air Force.
