COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 19 Bowling Green, 3-2, Saturday in Value City Arena to wrap up a home-and-home series between the teams. The Falcons scored the gamewinner with 2:40 remaining in regulation, less than a minute after the Buckeyes had tied the game at two. The Buckeyes (3-6-1, 0-0-0 B1G) and Falcons (8-3-1, 5-1-0 WCHA) split the nonconference series, with each team winning 3-2 on the road on a late goal.
Next up for the Buckeyes, the squad hosts Michigan State Thursday and Friday to open Big Ten play. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. both nights in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes and Falcons were tied after the first period. At 10:59, Bowling Green’s Mike Sullivan opened the scoring, taking a pass from Jakob Reichert and scoring from the faceoff circle. The Buckeyes tied the game on a goal by sophomore defenseman Josh Healey at 15:28. Junior Tyler Lundey won a faceoff in the BGSU zone back to Healey, and his shot from the point got through for his first goal of the season and second of his career. Ohio State outshot Bowling Green, 14-8, in the period. The Falcons had two power play chances in the stanza and Ohio State’s had one full chance, with a second carrying into the second period. A third BG penalty gave Buckeye Tanner Fritz a penalty shot at 17:32, but BG goalie Chris Nell made the save. It was the first penalty shot for a Buckeye since March 8, 2008 at Northern Michigan.
The Buckeyes were outshot, 10-1, in the second period, with the Falcons ending the period ahead, 2-1. Sean Walker netted the only goal of the stanza, converting a 5-on-3 power play at 17:32, assisted by Dan DeSalvo and Pierre-Luc Mercier. The Falcons had four power play chances in the stanza, with Ohio State’s one chance carrying into the third.
At 16:33 of the third, Nick Schilkey tipped a shot from the point by junior Sam Jardine, tying the game at two all. Jardine has an assist in each of his last three games and five on the year, while the goal was Schilkey’s first of the season. Just 47 seconds later, Falcon Brandon Hawkins got to a loose puck in the neutral zone and scored on the fly, putting Bowling Green back ahead. The Buckeyes pulled goalie Christian Frey for the extra attacker with 1:19 remaining, and had chances on net, but were unable to convert. Shots in the period were 14-12 in favor of the Buckeyes. Each team had one power play chance in the stanza.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 30-29. Frey played 58:41 and had 27 saves for the Buckeyes. Nell made 27 stops in all 60 minutes for BGSU.
Ohio State was scoreless on three power play chances in the game, with Bowling Green converting 1-of-7 opportunities.
The game was the sixth one-goal game for the Buckeyes this season, with the squad 2-4 in those games.
