Barrett earns 13th player of the week award – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – J.T. Barrett was named today as the Maxwell Award National Player of the Week after his terrific, 386-yard, 5-touchdown effort that carried Ohio State to a 49-37 win over Michigan State and it’s nationally ranked defense last Saturday in East Lansing.
Barrett completed 16 of 26 passing attempts for 300 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, plus he rushed for 86 yards and two more touchdowns as the Buckeyes won a Big Ten-record 21st consecutive Big Ten game and for a nation’s-best 12th consecutive time on the road. His efforts had previously earned him Athlons’ National Player of the Week and its National Freshman of the Week awards. The Big Ten Conference also selected Barrett as its Offensive Player of the Week and its Freshman of the Week.
The Maxwell Award is the 13th national or Big Ten “player of the week” award for Barrett this season. The red-shirt freshman from Wichita Falls, Texas, and Rider High School, has earned at least one player of the week honor after six of his nine starts this season.

Kent State (2) – Big Ten Offensive & Freshman ofthe Week after throwing for school-record six touchdown passes and318 yards; Cincinnati (1) – Big Ten Freshman of the Weekafter accumulating the second-most yards in a game in schoolhistory – 409 – including 330 passing yards and five touchdownsresponsible for; Maryland (2) – Athlon’s National Freshmanof the Week & Earl Campbell Tyler Rose National Player of theWeek after passing for 267 yards and four touchdowns with 338 yardsof total offense; Rutgers (2) – Big Ten Offensive &Freshman of the Week after a 368-yard total offense game, including107 rushing yards, with four touchdowns; and Michigan State(5) – Maxwell Award Player of the Week; Athlon’s NationalPlayer and Freshman of the Week; Big Ten Conference Offensive andFreshman of the Week after throwing for 300 yards, rushing for 86and accounting for five touchdowns on the road against the nation’sNo. 5-ranked defense.
Barrett, one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, remains among the national leaders in a handful of key statistical categories, including:
- Passing TD percentage – 1st at 11.2 pct.;
- Passing efficiency – 2nd at 172.9;
- Touchdown passes – 5th with 26;
- Points responsible for – 2nd with 204;
- Points responsible for per game – 2nd at 22.7; and
- Total offense – 18th at 304.2.
Taking over the starting quarterback responsibilities in mid-August after sitting out last season, Barrett has led Ohio State to an 8-1 record and a 5-0 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Barrett and the Buckeyes head to Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday for a noon EST game against 7-2 and 4-1 Minnesota, which is coming off a 51-14 victory over a 6-2 Iowa team. ABC will televise the game to a national audience.
