COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State football program was one full of achievers this year, on the playing field and in the classroom. The Buckeyes went 12-0 for only the sixth undefeated season in school history and today the university released its annual list of OSU Scholar-Athletes and 30 football players were honored. Only the swimming team (34) had more Scholar-Athletes than the football team did on the men’s side and only one other sport – women’s rowing with 37 – had more than the football team.
OSU Scholar-Athletes have to have an overall grade point average of 3.00 or better for the academic year. Leading the way were two fifth-year seniors – punter Ben Buchanan, from Westerville, Ohio, and fullback Adam Homan, from Coldwater, Ohio – who are Scholar-Athletes for the fifth time. Buchanan already graduated with a degree in strategic communications and is pursuing a master’s in sports administration. Homan is completing requirements for a degree in exercise science.
More than half (16) of the Scholar-Athletes entered the football program since coach Urban Meyer has taken over, including seven true freshmen who played enough to earn a varsity letter in 2012: SAF Najee Murray, CB Armani Reeves, DL Tommy Schutt, DL Noah Spence, WR Michael Thomas, DL Adolphus Washington and LB Camren Williams.
