Coach Woody Hayes faced Indiana 24 times in his 28 seasons at Ohio State. He walked away in defeat only once – his first meeting with the Crimson & Cream in 1951.
Hayes’ nearly 92-percent winning percentage (22-1-1) against the Hoosiers was his best vs. any team. In OSU history, only John W. Wilce (14-0 vs. Ohio Wesleyan from 1913-1928) has a better percentage against a single opponent (minimum 10 games).
In the 1952 season-opener, Hayes notched his first victory over Indiana with the help of a freshman halfback playing in his first collegiate game. Howard “Hopalong” Cassady scored three touchdowns in the 33-13 win, jump-starting one of the finest four-year careers by a Buckeye.
Cassady won the Heisman trophy, a national title and two outright Big Ten championships in his four seasons donning the Scarlet & Gray. He also helped OSU to three victories over Michigan.
On Nov. 18, 1978, Hayes earned his 22nd victory over the Hoosiers, 21-18 in Bloomington. It was the last win of the legendary coach’s career.
