COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team plays host to Minnesota Duluth this Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center. Both games are scheduled for a 3:07 p.m. opening face-off.

Special Promotion
Friday and Saturday will be doubleheaders at the Schott with women’s hockey in the afternoon and men’s hockey in the evening as the Ohio State men’s hockey team battles Canisius. Fans who attend women’s hockey will receive a free ticket to that night’s men’s game at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: Bemidji State
The Buckeyes dropped Friday’s game with Bemidji State 3-2. OSU outshot the Beavers 33-27 and had a 1-0 lead after the first goal of the season from junior Kayla Sullivan. Three-straight Beaver goals within an eight minute span in the second period put the Buckeyes in a hole and they were unable to crawl out despite a goal from junior Sara Schmitt to make it a one goal game in the third. An altercation following the game led to 20 DQs, 11 for OSU. The Buckeyes finished the game with an NCAA record 173 penalty minutes. The combined 318 minutes in the game is also a NCAA record.
On Saturday the Buckeyes skated to a 2-all tie with BSU despite outshooting the Beavers 52-29. The Beavers picked up the shootout win. Freshman Breanne Grant and junior Danielle Gagne scored the goals for OSU Saturday. The teams skated with just six forwards and four defensemen each on Saturday due to the DQs given to each team the night before. OSU was also down a goaltender due to a DQ. Senior Lisa Steffes started Saturday, making 27 saves and finished the series with 37 total saves in the two games combined.
Knapp Breaks OSU Saves Record
Redshirt senior goaltender Chelsea Knapp is now the all-time leader for saves made in Ohio State program history. Her 14 saves in Friday night’s contest put her at 2,278 for her career, passing former Buckeye Melissa Glaser’s 2,271 for most all-time at OSU. Knapp also has another program record in her sights as she currently has 40 career wins, just three shy of passing former Buckeye Erika Vanderveer for most all-time at OSU.
News and Notes
- The games against UMD will mark the first women’s hockey games played at VCA this season.
- Last year the Buckeyes played at VCA for the first time in program history, hosting Wisconsin Nov. 16-17. They again played there Jan. 25-26 against UMD. OSU is 1-3-0 all-time playing at the facility.
- Sara Schmitt has a team-leading ten points this season on three goals and seven assists.
- Junior Kari Schmitt has a team-leading four goals and is tied for second on the team with nine points.
- Senior Ally Tarr has a team-leading eight assists and is tied for second on the team with nine points.
- Sara and Kari are 1-2 for WCHA defensemen in points-per-game at 1.25 and 1.12, respectively.
- The goal for Grant on Saturday was the first of her collegiate career.
- Gagne and senior Becky Allis both had two-point series against Bemidji State.
- Freshman Bryanna Neuwald picked up her first point of the season with an assist Saturday.
About Minnesota Duluth
The Bulldogs enter the series with a record of 4-4-2 overall, 2-4-2 in WCHA play. Junior Jenna McParland leads the team offensively with 13 points on a team-leading six goals and seven assists. Senior Jamie Kenyon (5-6-11) and freshman Lara Stalder (3-8-11) also are big contributors this season offensively for the UMD. Sophomore goaltender Kayla Black has seen most of the time in net for UMD, putting up a 2.86 goals-allowed average and a .909 save percentage. Head coach Shannon Miller has been at the helm of UMD since its inaugural season and has led the Bulldogs to five national championships.
Buckeyes vs. Bulldogs
The Buckeyes went 4-2-0 against Minnesota Duluth last season. They went 4-0-0 in Duluth and lost both games against the Bulldogs in Columbus. OSU knocked UMD out in the WCHA First Round Playoffs on the road last season to advance to the WCHA Final Face-Off for the first time since 2010. The Bulldogs have a large advantage in the all-time series record as the Buckeyes are just 11-50-4 against UMD.

Four Nations Cup
The Ohio State University and Ohio State women’s hockey was well represented this year as five former Buckeyes competed at the 2013 Four Nations Cup, Nov. 5-9, in Lake Placid, N. Y. Team USA featured former Buckeye defenseman Lisa Chesson (2005-08), while forward Natalie Spooner (2009-12) and defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (2004-08) skated for Team Canada and Team Finland featured forward Minttu Tuominen (2010-13) and defenseman Emma Terho (Laaksonen) (2001-04). Canada took home the gold following a win in the championship game against Finland, 6-3. Team USA took bronze with an 8-1 victory over Sweden. Spooner finished with an impressive four goals in the tournament. Tuominen scored a goal in a game versus Sweden.
