Buckeyes Fall to No. 5/6 North Dakota, 5-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to No. 5/6 North Dakota, 5-2, Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N. D.
The loss marks the first for the Buckeyes this season as they fall to 2-1-1, 1-1-1 in the WCHA. North Dakota improves to 4-0-1, 2-0-1 in WCHA play.
The Buckeyes had to dig themselves out of an early hole after giving up three first period goals. Tanja Eisenschmid made it 1-0 just 59 seconds in and Halli Krzyzaniak and Andrea Dalen added power play goals at 4:47 and 8:21 of the period to take a three-goal advantage.
The second period belonged to the Buckeyes as they cut into the lead with two power play scores of their own. At the 4:27 mark, Julia McKinnon found the back of the net for the first time this season to make it a 3-1 game. Assists were credited to senior Ally Tarr and junior Sara Schmitt on the scoring play.
With just under two minutes to play in the second, Schmitt cleaned up a rebound in front of the net for her second goal of the season and the lead was cut to 3-2. Assists went to McKinnon and junior Kari Schmitt, who originally put the net puck on net with a shot from the top of the zone.
Ohio State had its chances in the third but was unable to beat North Dakota goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie who finished her night with 20 saves. Michelle Karvinen gave UND a three-goal lead with just under seven minutes to play in regulation and Becca Kohler added another to make it 5-2 at the 15:40 mark of the third.
Shots on goal in the contest were in favor of Ohio State, 22-21, and the Buckeyes had an 18-12 advantage in the final two periods. Each team went 2-2 on the power play and redshirt senior goaltender Chelsea Knapp stopped 16 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State and North Dakota play again tomorrow night with game time set for 8:07 p.m. ET.
