Athletes of the Week
Men’s volleyball sophomore libero Brennan Anderson notched a career-high 12 digs in Ohio State’s season-opening win over Saint Francis Saturday to lead all student-athletes in the match. In addition, Anderson successfully passed all 18 serves faced and added a career-best three assists in the victory. Anderson was named MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his performance, the first honor of his career.
Women’s basketball senior guard Tayler Hill had a career week, scoring 64 points (32.0 ppg) intwo close losses, while hitting nine 3FGs, going 17 of 19 (.895)from the free throw line and recording 10 rebounds, six assists,seven steals and three blocked shots. In the overtime loss at Iowa,Hill scored a career-high 34 points, hit four 3FGs – including a35-footer – and hit all eight from the stripe. She also added fivesteals, two blocked shots and five rebounds. In the narrow loss toIllinois, Hill scored 30, hit 9 of 11 from the foul line, hit fivemore 3FGs, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists. Shehas now reached double-figures in scoring in 49 consecutive games.
No. 15 Men’s Basketball (11-3, 1-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Nebraska, 70-44, at Value City Arena Jan. 2in its Big Ten Conference season opener.
Wednesday’s game marked the ninth all-time meeting between the twoschools; the Buckeyes hold a 7-2 advantage in the series and are5-0 in games played in Columbus.
The Scarlet & Gray held Nebraska under 50 points for thethird-consecutive game between the schools.
Junior forward Deshaun Thomas led all scorers with 22 points, and outscoredthe entire Nebraska team, 18-17, in the first half. With 1,156points, Thomas moved to No. 35 on the all-time scoring list.
Junior guard Aaron Craft recorded three steals against the Cornhuskers topass David Lighty (191, 2007-11) for No. 2 on the all-time list atOhio State (193).
Craft tied a season-best with eight assists for the game, moving toNo. 5 on the all-time list at Ohio State with 423 for his career.He also notched a season best six rebounds.
Junior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. totaled 17 points for the Buckeyes andconnected on a career-best five 3-point field goals, and sophomorecenter Amir Williams scored a career-high eight points, tied a careerbest with four blocks and notched a career best two steals.
The Buckeyes returned to the court against Illinois on Jan. 5,falling to the Illini, 74-55, at Assembly Hall.
Deshaun Thomas and Aaron Craft scored in double figures for the Buckeyes, with 24and 11 points, respectively.
Thomas led all scorers with his 24 points and with 1,180 pointsmoves to No. 34 on the all-time scoring list at Ohio State. Heneeds 31 points to pass Luke Witte for thirty-third all time.
In addition to 11 points, Craft recorded four steals and chipped inthree assists.
Ohio State will next face Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. on Jan. 8and Michigan at Value City Arena on Jan. 13. The games will tip offat 9 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
Women’s Basketball (10-5, 0-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to Iowa, 77-71, in overtime at Carver-HawkeyeArena Jan. 3 in its Big Ten Conference season opener.
Senior guard Tayler Hill led the Buckeyes in scoring with a career-high 34points in addition to five steals. She was followed by juniorcenter Darryce Moore, freshman guard Ameryst Alston and sophomore guard Raven Ferguson, who each chipped in nine.
Junior center Ashley Adams paced Ohio State on the boards, notching sixrebounds.
The Buckeyes next faced Illinois at Value City Arena, falling tothe Illini, 79-73, on Sunday afternoon.
Darryce Moore recorded a career-high 17 points in 26 minutes,while Tayler Hill scored 30 points to record back-to-back 30-pointgames after scoring a career-high 34 at Iowa.
Hill has scored in double figures in 49 consecutive games, thelongest active streak in the Big Ten.
Freshman Cait Craft played a career high 15 minutes vs. Illinois.
Ashley Adams was 5-for-5 from the field and finished the gamewith 11 points.
The 4,516 in attendance was the largest crowd at Value City Arenafor women’s basketball this season.
Ohio State will next face Minnesota at 8 p.m. in Minneapolis onJan. 10, and Purdue at 7:30 p.m. in West Lafayette on Jan.14.
No. 8 Men’s Gymnastics

Ohio State will compete in its annual Alumni Exhibition at theSteelwood Athletic Facility on Sat. Jan. 12. The meet is set tostart at 2 p.m.
No. 14 Women’s Gymnastics (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State won its 2013 opener, 194.600 – 192.200, over BowlingGreen Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena.
The Buckeyes started off the meet on bars, with senior Aly Marohn, senior Colleen Dean and junior Melanie Shaffer each scoring a 9.825 to tie for first. Thescore marked a career best for Shaffer, who had not competed onbars since her freshman season two years ago.
The Buckeyes next competed on vault, tallying a 49.725 to topBowling Green’s score of 48.550. Junior Sarah Miller tied her career best to take first with a 9.950while sophomore Sarah Grady posted a career high 9.900 to finish second. Milleralso posted a 9.875 to finish first on floor exercise.
Ohio State concluded the meet on balance beam, defeating theFalcons 48.825-47.775. Miller again paced the team with a 9.875 totake the event title while Marohn followed with a 9.825 to finishsecond.
The Buckeyes travel to Corvallis, Ore., for a dual meet againstOregon State at 10 p.m. ET Jan. 11.
Men’s Hockey (7-8-5, 6-3-3-1 CCHA)

The Buckeyes had a bye week last week. The Buckeyes return toaction with back-to-back CCHA road series at Ferris State (Jan.11-12) and Northern Michigan (Jan. 18-19). The team will host LakeSuperior State in Value City Arena Jan. 25-26.
No. 9 Women’s Hockey (14-5-1, 9-4-1 WCHA)

Ohio State held its Scarlet & Gray Intrasquad scrimmage onSaturday, Jan. 5., at the OSU Ice Rink. The day started off with aYouth Holiday Clinic from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., followed by thescrimmage, an autograph session and a skills competition.
The Buckeyes return to action in a WCHA road series at Wisconsin(Jan. 11-12). Game times are set for 8 p.m. both nights.

No. 4 Wrestling (7-1, 1-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State dropped a 22-9 decision at No. 5 Iowa Friday night(Jan. 4) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Sophomore Hunter Stieber remained undefeated with his 6-4 win over No. 8Mark Ballweg. Stieber trailed the undefeated Ballweg early in thematch, 2-0, but regained the lead in the second period afterscoring a pair of takedowns and an escape.
Sophomore Cam Tessari edged Michael Kelly, 8-7, to earn another win forthe Buckeyes. With the match appearing to head into overtime,Tessari recorded an escape in the final seconds for the win.
Redshirt-junior Peter Capone handed No. 4 Bobby Telford his first loss of theseason with a 3-2 overtime win.
The Buckeyes returned to the mat at No. 15 Northwestern Jan. 6,defeating the Wildcats, 33-6, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston,Ill.
The Buckeyes quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a pin fromNikko Triggas over No. 15 Dominick Malone in the 125-poundmatchup. With his seventh fall of the season, Triggas has movedinto sole possession of fourth place in the Ohio State records bookfor career falls with 44.
Redshirt-freshman Kyle Visconti earned his first-career varsity win at 133 poundswhen he recorded a 6-5 decision over Garrison White to lift theScarlet & Gray to a 9-0 lead.
No. 2 Hunter Stieber secured his 20th victory of the season to remainperfect thanks to a 10-5 decision vs. Pat Greco, while No. 14Cam Tessari remained perfect on the weekend following his 8-3decision over Dylan Marriot.
Redshirt-junior and No. 2 Nick Heflin earned a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Lee Munster in the174-pound bout, while senior C.J. Magrum returned to the starting lineup for the first timesince Nov. 18 vs. Pittsburgh, pinning Marcus Shrewbury in4:42.
Sophomore No. 9 Andrew Campolattano handed No. 16 Alex Polizzi a 10-4 loss,while Capone won his match via forfeit for the 33-6 final.

Ohio State opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22,25-16) win over Saint Francis Saturday night in St. JohnArena.
Sophomore Michael Henchy led the match with 12 kills and added three digsand two block assists.
Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Lutz, who played in his first match for the Buckeyes,finished with 10 kills and two service aces.
Sophomore libero Brennan Anderson had a career-best 12 digs, while redshirtsenior John Tholen had six kills on seven attempts with a .857 hittingpercentage.
The Buckeyes travel to Hawaii for the 2013 Outrigger Tournamentheld in Honolulu, Jan. 10-12. Ohio State faces host Hawaii, No. 6UCLA and No. 8 Penn State during the three-day tournament.
