Athletes of the Week
Men’s gymnastics freshman Jake Martin played a pivotal role in helping the Buckeyes earn a second-place tie with defending national champion Illinois at the 2013 Windy City Invitational Saturday in Chicago, Ill. In his first collegiate meet, Martin claimed first place on high bar with a score of 15.250 to lead all gymnasts while also earning a score of 15.150 on pommel horse to place second. The Oviedo, Fla., native also tallied a 14.250 on parallel bars to finish just outside of the top ten in a tie for 11th place.
Women’s gymnastics junior Sarah Miller earned Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Week honorsafter leading Ohio State to a 194.925 – 194.200 win over IowaSaturday afternoon at St. John Arena. Miller claimed first place inall three events she competed in as she tied for first on vaultwith a 9.900, took first on beam with a 9.850 and won floorexercise with a season-best 9.925. The award marks the 11th careerBig Ten weekly honor for the Collegeville, Pa., native.
No. 11 Men’s Basketball (13-4, 3-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to No. 18 Michigan State, 59-56, at the BreslinCenter in East Lansing, Mich.
Junior forward Deshaun Thomas led all scorers with 28 points. With 1,250points, Thomas moves to No. 30 on the all-time scoring list at OhioState. He needs 32 points to pass former teammate Jared Sullinger for 30th all-time.
Thomas has scored in double figures in all 17 games this season andtotaled 20 or more points in ten contests. He also connected on acareer-high six three-point shots.
Junior guard Aaron Craft recorded a season-high five steals against theSpartans. He is tied for first on the all-time list in steals atOhio State with 204 and is now one of only two Buckeyes in historyto record 200 career steals.
Craft has recorded at least one steal in 12-consecutivegames.
Ohio State is back in action Jan. 22 against Iowa at Value CityArena in a 6:30 p.m. tip and Jan. 26 at Penn State in a 12 p.m.tip.
Women’s Basketball (11-8, 1-5 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Jim Foster
Ohio State defeated Indiana, 68-45, Thursday night at ValueCity Arena.
Senior Tayler Hill scored in double figures for the 51st consecutivegame, the longest active streak in the Big Ten while juniorDarryce Moore scored in double figures for the fourthconsecutive game. Moore finished the game with 14 points and sixrebounds.
Freshman Ameryst Alston tied her career best for rebounds witheight.
The Ohio State bench scored 19 points, including Sasha Dobranic whofinished with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 19 minutes ofaction.
Ohio State fell to Wisconsin, 68-49, Sunday afternoon at the KohlCenter.
Hill led the Buckeyes with 16 points to move into eighth place onOhio State’s career scoring list. Junior center Ashley Adams recorded her fourth double-double of the seasonwith 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Raven Ferguson added seven while Cait Craft and Moore both added six.
The Buckeyes have a week off before returning home to face No. 8Penn State at 1 p.m. Sunday at Value City Arena.
Fencing

Seven Ohio State fencers competed at the Junior North AmericanCup in Louisville, Ky., Jan. 18-20.
In women’s foil, sophomores Mona and Mai Shaito took first and second place respectively, earningone gold and one silver medal for Ohio State.
Classmate Nina Stackhouse posted a ninth-place finish in foil whilefreshman Kyjah Coryat followed closely behind, earning 11th place.
The Buckeyes fence again next weekend at the St. John’s Duals onSat. Jan. 26 and the NYU Duals on Sun. Jan. 27. Both are being heldin New York.
No. 5 Men’s Gymnastics (3-1-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State tied for second place with No. 1 Illinois at the2013 Windy City Invitational Saturday night at the UIC PhysicalEducation Building in Chicago, Ill. The Buckeyes tallied a score of427.750 to finish the season opening meet tied with the defendingnational champions.

Redshirt junior Michael Newburger posted a 14.700 to finish eighth on pommelhorse while senior John Laing posted a 14.400 to finish just outside of the topten in 11th place.
Sophomore Drew Moling tallied a 14.800 to tie for third place on rings,while Treleaven scored a 15.150 to finish in second place on vault.Sophomore Larry Mayer placed third on vault with a 15.000.
Ohio State returns to action at the Metroplex Challenge in Dallas,Texas at 7 p.m. Jan. 25.
No. 19 Women’s Gymnastics (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State topped Iowa, 194.925-194.200, in its home openerSaturday afternoon at St. John Arena.
Junior Sarah Miller led the Buckeyes to tie for first on vault with a9.900 while senior Aly Marohn recorded a season-best 9.850 to finish third. OhioState narrowly took the vault title, 49.075-49.050.
In the second rotation, junior Melanie Shaffer placed first on bars with a career-best 9.850while Marohn took second with a 9.800 as Ohio State won the event,48.850-48.750.
Ohio State moved to beam in the third rotation where Miller tallieda 9.850 to take the event title. Shaffer, Marohn and sophomoreSarah Grady each posted a 9.675.
Miller placed first on floor exercise with a season-best 9.925while Shaffer set a season high with 9.900 to finish second.
Shaffer took the all-around title with a season-best 39.250.
The Buckeyes next take on Nebraska at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 in St. JohnArena.
Men’s Hockey (8-11-5, 7-6-3 CCHA)

Ohio State dropped its weekend series opener to NorthernMichigan, 4-2, Friday night at the Berry Events Center inMarquette, Mich.
Buckeye freshman Anthony Greco tallied the first of two goals for the Buckeyesmidway through the second period. Sophomore Ryan Dzingel and freshman Sam Jardine had the assists.
Sophomore Tanner Fritz scored the second goal of the night for theBuckeyes at the 4:32 mark of the third period on an assist fromJardine.
Ohio State had no penalties assessed for the first time since Jan.11, 2002 vs. Lake Superior State in Columbus (a 1-1 OT tie in whichthe Lakers also were not whistled for a penalty).
Jardine had the first two-point game of his career. It was thesixth two-assist game for a Buckeye this year.
The Buckeyes did not allow a power play goal for the third straightgame (10-for-10), holding their opponents scoreless in eight of thelast 12 games (33-for-37, .892).
Greco, who was playing for the first time since Nov. 9 aftermissing the last 15 games with an injury, netted his second careergoal.
Ohio State suffered a 3-2 loss on the road at Northern MichiganSaturday in Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
Buckeye sophomore Max McCormick scored on the power play in the final two minutesof the second period. The goal was assisted by Dzingel andJardine.
Junior Curtis Gedig netted his first goal of the season for theBuckeyes at the 13:48 mark of the third period on a pass fromDzingel. Fritz had the second assist on the tally.
Ohio State’s power play goals were the team’s first since Dec. 7vs. Robert Morris. It was the team’s first game with multiplepower-play tallies since Nov. 17 vs. Northern Michigan.
Dzingel had his third two-assist game of the year. He is first onthe squad with 20 points, ranking first with nine goals and secondwith 11 assists.
Fritz is on a four-game point streak, with 1-3-4 totals in thestretch. He is second on the team with 17 points, and a team-high13 assists.
McCormick is second on the team with eight goals and third with 13points. He has a point in three of the last four games.
No. 9 Women’s Hockey (15-7-2, 10-6-2 WCHA)
Head Coach: Nate Handrahan
Ohio State skated to a 1-1 tie with St. Cloud State Fridaynight at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes earned two points aftertaking a 1-0 shootout win.
Sophomore Danielle Gagne notched the only regulation goal for theBuckeyes while junior Ally Tarr made the only goal of the shootout to give Ohio Statethe extra league point.
Tarr also had an assist on Gagne’s goal along with freshmanBryanna Neuwald.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp finished the night with 30 saves. Shots on goalwere 34-31 in favor of the Buckeyes.
Ohio State defeated St. Cloud State, 3-1, Saturday at the OSU IceRink.
Tarr notched her sixth goal of the season at the 5:04 mark in thefirst period with assists to Gagne and sophomore Sara Schmitt.
Tarr picked up her second goal of the game at the 8:01 mark in thesecond to give Ohio State a 2-1 advantage. Assists went tosophomore Taylor Kuehl and Schmitt.
Kuehl would give the Buckeyes some breathing room with a power playgoal late in the third period, her team-leading 12th of the season.The score was assisted by sophomore Kari Schmitt, her 16th of the season.
Knapp stopped 24 of 25 shots faced and picked up her 15th victoryof the season.
Ohio State will host Minnesota Duluth Jan. 24-25 at Value CityArena.
Pistol
Head Coach: James Sweeney
Ohio State hosted Navy and VMI at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie RangeJan. 19-20.
The Buckeyes swept all three open events to tally an aggregatescore of 6,355, defeating defending national champion Navy (6,281)and VMI (4,141).
Junior Joe Totts continued his winning streak in standard pistol,winning the event with an overall score of 557. He has now wonstandard pistol in six of seven matches this season.
Behind Totts, sophomore Greyson McCaig scored a 540 to earn second place. McCaig alsopaved the way for the Buckeyes in air pistol, shooting a 560 toearn first place.
Senior Blake Reburn solidified the Ohio State sweep with a win infree pistol, as his overall score of 525 was enough to take firstplace. Reburn also earned second place in air pistol with a 554score.
In women’s competition, junior Kimberly Hullings led the Buckeyes with a second place finishin sport pistol (551) and a third place finish in air pistol(357).
The Buckeyes return to action as hosts of the Winter Open Jan.25-26 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range. The Citadel, the Universityof Akron and “open” community shooters will compete with theBuckeyes at 4 p.m. Jan. 25 and 9 a.m. Jan. 26.
No. 6 Men’s Swimming & Diving
Head Coach: Bill Wadley
Ohio State wrapped up a tri-meet Saturday afternoon inBloomington, Ind., posting a win over No. 18 Iowa (183-105) butfalling short to No. 10 Indiana (148-150).
Junior Alex Miller led the way for the Buckeyes, dominating thedistance freestyle events to earn two individual wins on theday.
The Buckeyes opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.Garrett Trebilcock, Keanu Stevenson, Tim Phillips and Jason Schnur touched the wall first with a time of1:28.63.
Miller touched first in the 1,000 freestyle in a season-best timeof 9:09.48. The time ranks as the fourth-fastest 1,000 freestyletime recorded in the Big Ten conference thus far this season. Healso touched first in the 500 freestyle with a time of4:26.61.
In the 200 butterfly, sophomore Tamas Gercsak took the top spot with a time of 1:48.86.
Phillips touched first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.22,and Ohio State earned first-place in the 400 freestyle relay behindstrong swims from Schnur, Michael Meldon, Miller and Zach Holmes. The group finished with a time of 2:59.75.
Schnur earned an individual win in the 100 freestyle to go alongwith his two top relay finishes for the day. The Cincinnati, Ohionative took first with a time of 44.92.
The Scarlet and Gray will wrap up the home dual schedule next week,hosting Cincinnati in a co-ed meet Jan. 26 at McCorkle AquaticPavilion. The team will recognize its senior class before the startof competition as part of Senior Day.
No. 15 Women’s Swimming & Diving

Ohio State fell at No. 25 Michigan, 163-137, Friday evening atCanham Natatorium in Ann Arbor.
The Buckeyes swept the 200 freestyle as junior Alex Norris touched the wall first with a time of 1:49.76followed by classmate Phoebe Carter (1:51.63) and freshman Katy Luchansky (1:51.71), respectively.
Senior Shannon Draves picked up the win in the 200 butterfly with atime of 2:00.00, while classmate Megan Detro won the 50 freestyle when she touched the wallfirst in 23:52.
In diving, junior Cheyenne Cousineau took back-to-back wins on the 1-meter(304.05) and 3-meter (318.60) springboards.
Detro earned her second win of the evening in the 100 freestylewith a time of 50.94, while senior Emily Creran won the 200 backstroke with a time of1:59.43.
Draves picked up her second win of the night in the 100 butterfly(55.03), while the quartet of Detro, Carter, Annie Jongekrijg and Norris swam a team season-best time of3:24.69 to place second in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Buckeyes next host Cincinnati Jan. 26 at McCorkle AquaticPavilion. As part of Senior Day, the team will recognize its seniorclass before the start of competition against the Bearcats.
Synchronized Swimming
Head Coach: Holly Vargo-Brown
Ohio State opened the 2013 season as hosts of the Ohio StateInvitational, Saturday, at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. TheBuckeyes scored 93 points while Miami University was second with33.5 points and Ball State rounded out the Top 3 with 18points.
Two-time collegiate national solo champion Yuliya Maryanko once again claimed first place in the soloroutine with an 88.0. Teammate Kristine Irwin was second, scoring 79.170 points, followed bythe RedHawks’ Erica Hegedus (67.500) and Rebecca Yoder(62.667).
Maryanko and Paige Ramsey paired up to form the only duet team that competedSaturday. The Buckeye duo scored an 84.333.
The afternoon concluded with the trio routine in which BuckeyesMaryanko, Ramsey and Lauren Nicholson came out on top, earning an 84.667.
Maryanko won the Technical A competition with an 80.935 andJulia Gaylard was crowned Technical B champion, scoring a68.062.
The Scarlet and Gray return to action at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 when theyhost the Jessica Beck Memorial Meet.
No. 4 Men’s Tennis (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State opened the 2013 spring season with a 7-0 win vs.Butler Wednesday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. TheBuckeyes won each of their singles matches in straight sets afterOhio State’s No. 1 and 2 doubles tandems won the openingpoint.
Peter Kobelt, the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation,clinched the match for Ohio State following his 6-3, 6-2 victoryvs. Austin Woldmoe.
In doubles action, the Ohio State pair of Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen was first off the courts after defeatingWoldmoe and Billy Weldon, 8-2. Kobelt and teammate Connor Smith followed with an 8-4 victory over Brandon Woodsand Sam O’Neill.
In singles play, Van Engelen shut out Pulok Bhattacharya (6-0, 6-0)to lift the Buckeyes to a 2-0 lead. Playing at No. 4 singles, Smithdefeated Woods (6-1, 6-2) while Hunter Callahan secured a 6-0, 6-4 win over O’Neill.
In his first match as a Buckeye, freshman Constantin Christ played to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Weldon.McCarthy ended the match with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win against TommyMarx.
Ohio State won its second match of the day Wednesday over Xavier atthe Varsity Tennis Center. The win marked the program’s 150thconsecutive win in Columbus.
In doubles play, the duo of Kevin Metka and Callahan was the first to claim victory forOhio State with an 8-1 victory over Brandon McDonald and ZachMueck. Van Engelen and McCarthy were the next duo to win with an8-4 victory against Philip Diaz and Mesa Mei.
The first Buckeye to win in singles play, Chris Diaz defeated McDonald 6-3, 6-2. He was followed bySmith, who was victorious over Adam Krull 6-2, 6-2. Constantin Christ was victorious for the second time onWednesday with a win over Freddy Abunku 6-2, 6-4.
The Buckeyes return to action in another doubleheader Jan. 24,hosting Youngstown State and Cleveland State at the Varsity TennisCenter at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
Women’s Tennis (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State opened its spring schedule with a 6-1 win at WestVirginia Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, W. Va.
Against the Mountaineers, Ohio State posted five singles wins andtwo doubles victories, with sophomore Kelsey Dieters, senior Kara Cecil and junior Noelle Malley all recording singles and doubles victories inthe match.
Ohio State clinched the doubles point, as Cecil and Dieters toppedthe Mountaineer tandem of Ikttesh Chahal and Hailey Barrett, 8-3.Malley and freshman Grainne O’Neill playing in her first collegiate dual match,were 8-3 winners over Vivian Tsui and Irinka Toidze.
The Buckeyes won five-of-six singles matches, including fourstraight-set matches en route to the team victory.
Dieters defeated Audrey Wooland (3-6, 7-5, 6-2), Cecil defeatedChahal (6-1, 7-5) and senior Gabby Steele defeated Emily Mathis (6-1, 6-0).
Malley defeated Tsui (6-4, 6-2) while redshirt freshman Nicole Flower defeated Toidze (6-2, 6-0).
Ohio State opens its home slate Wednesday with two matches insidethe Varsity Tennis Center. The squad will host Toledo at 10 a.m.before taking on Cincinnati at 6 p.m. Admission is free to allBuckeye regular-season home matches.
Men’s Track & Field
Head Coach: Ed Beathea
Ohio State competed at the Gladstein Invitational inBloomington, Ind., Friday and Saturday.
Cory Kunze claimed first place in the heptathlon with 5,235points. He took first in the 60m and 60m hurdles; second in theshot put; third in the pole vault, long jump and 1000m; and sixthin the high jump.
Timothy Faust earned second place in the 60m with a time of6.90 seconds.
With a time of 21.45 Faust took home first place in the 200m,followed closely by Batcha (21.72) who finished second.
Champ Page won the 400m, crossing the finish line in 48.51seconds.
The Buckeyes took the top four spots in the 800-meter event. Aseason-best time of 1:54.65 helped Marvel Brooks to first place, followed by Joshua Sabo(1:55.99), Steven Weaver (1:56.56) and Kurt Grove (1:57.39).
J.C. Murasky (17.15m/56-3.25) earned a first place finish forOhio State in the shot put.
Michael Hartfield, competing unattached, took the top spot inlong jump with a personal-best jump of 7.77m/25-6. Korbin Smith (7.52m/24-8.25) also put in a personal-best toplace second.
Hartfield took home his second first place finish in the triplejump with a jump of 15.74m (51-7.75).
The Ohio State 4x400m relay team consisting of Page, Smith, Brooksand Blanks won the event in a time 3:12.70.
The Buckeyes return to action Jan. 25-26 at the McCravy MemorialInvitational in Lexington, Ky.
Women’s Track & Field

Ohio State competed at the Gladstein Invitational inBloomington, Ind., Friday and Saturday.
Ashlee Abraham took the top spot overall in the 60m with a timeof 7.51 seconds.
Christienne Linton and Alexandria Johnson finished 1-2 overall in the 60m hurdles withtimes of 8.47 and 8.55 seconds respectively.
With a time of 10:00.53, Tori Brink took first place in the 3000m.
Ohio State- Cheyenne Hoerr, Aisha Cavin, SoSo Walker and Alexandria Johnson – won the 4x400m in a time of 3:46.68.
The Buckeye team of Katie Borchers, Janel Olberding, Katie Betts and Tori Brink put in a first place performance in the 4x800m,finishing in a time of 9:03.16.
The Buckeyes return to action Jan. 25-26 at the McCravy MemorialInvitational in Lexington, Ky.
No. 6 Wrestling (9-2, 3-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Indiana, 36-3, in Bloomington, Ind., Fridaynight at University Gym.
The Buckeyes jumped out to an 18-0 lead after winning their firstfour matches of the evening. Senior Nikko Triggas opened the match with a takedown vs. Joe Duca inthe 125-pound bout and 40 seconds later pinned the Hoosier to liftOhio State to a 6-0 advantage.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Visconti earned an 8-2 win vs. Alonzo Shepard.
With his win in the 141-pound match, sophomore Hunter Stieber improved to 22-0 on the season after notchinghis first technical fall of the 2012-13 campaign. A 16-1 winnerover Joe Randazzo, Stieber has collected 11 bonus point victoriesthis season, including a team-leading eight major decisions.
Sophomore Cam Tessari scored Ohio State’s second consecutive bonus winand third of the first four bouts when he posted a 14-4 majordecision over Preston Keiffer at 149 pounds.
Freshman Mark Martin earned a 6-4 overtime win against Ryan Konz, whostarted in place of the injured Ryan LeBlanc.
Redshirt junior Nick Heflin earned a 4-0 win vs. Cheney Dale at 174 pounds,while senior C.J. Magrum used a takedown with 25 seconds left in the matchto beat Luke Sheridan, 6-4, in the 184-pound bout.
Redshirt junior Peter Capone concluded the match with a 2-1 win over No. 13Adam Chalfant.
Ohio State earned its third Big Ten win of the season Sundayafternoon when it beat No. 19 Wisconsin, 29-10, in St. JohnArena.
Backed by a pair of pins from Hunter Stieber and Nikko Triggas at 141 and 125 pounds, respectively, and atechnical fall by Kenny Courts in the 184-pound bout, the Scarlet and Graydefeated their fifth ranked opponent of the season.
Triggas’ match vs. Matt Cavallaris concluded the afternoon and theBuckeye’s 45-second fall marks his ninth of the season and 46th ofhis career. Triggas’ career count ranks him third all time and nowhe is one fall shy of a tie for second place.
Josh Demas, who has faced the Nos. 1, 2 and 12th-rankedwrestlers in the nation at 157 pounds, earned his first Big Ten winof the season on a 5-3 decision vs. Charles York.
Teammate Mark Martin also won his first league match of the season whendecisioned Frank Cousins, 8-3 at 165 pounds.
The Buckeyes are back in action Feb. 1 when they host Illinois at 7p.m. in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (3-2, 0-0 MIVA)
Head Coach: Pete Hanson
Ohio State traveled to Loretto, Pa., and took a 3-1 (25-18,25-23, 22-25, 25-21) win over Saint Francis Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Michael Henchy totaled 14 kills in the win and added four digsand two service aces. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz finished with 11 kills, while seniors John Tholen and Chen Levitan had seven apiece.
Defensively, Tholen led the match with five blocks (1s, 4a). Lutzand Henchy had one solo and three block assists each in the match.Sophomore libero Brennan Anderson notched a career-best 18 digs to lead theBuckeyes.
The Buckeyes open MIVA competition, traveling to conferencenewcomer Lindenwood Jan. 26-27. Matches are set for 8 p.m. and 3p.m., respectively, in St. Charles, Mo.
