Athletes of the Week
Shawn Sangrey was named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Buckeyes to a pair of three-set sweeps over the weekend. In a crucial MIVA weekend, Sangrey helped guide the Buckeyes from fourth in the conference to first with sweeps of conference-title contenders Loyola-Chicago and then-No. 6 Lewis in St. John Arena, March 30-31. On the weekend, Sangrey averaged 5.50 kills per set and 6.25 points per set. He continues to lead the nation with a 4.85 kills per set average and a 5.48 points per set average on the season. Sangrey is tied for first versus MIVA opponents with a 4.69 kills per set average and is first overall with a 5.38 points per set average.
EvelynCarrillo, a sophomore on the Ohio State softball team, helpedthe Buckeyes to a 5-0 mark last week, posting a .722 average with13 hits, 13 RBI, two doubles and two home runs at the plate.Carrillo, who is now second on the team with 26 RBI, went animpressive 11-for-12 with eight RBI, a double and a home run andthree runs scored in a series sweep at Michigan State over theweekend.
Athletics
Fifty-nine Ohio State student-athletes have been named AcademicAll-Big Ten, the conference office announced March 28. In all, 615conference student-athletes from seven sports were honored.
Baseball (14-11, 2-3 Big Ten)

Ohio State baseball team topped Eastern Michigan, 13-4, March27 at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Jaron Long came out on top in a pitcher’s duel with MichiganState’s Tony Bucciferro as Ohio State nipped the Spartans, 1-0, inGame 1 of a three-game set March 31 at McLane Stadium.
Ohio State dropped a 2-1 decision to Michigan State April 1 atMcLane Stadium.
No. 7 Men’s Basketball (31-8, 13-5 Big Ten)

AaronCraft is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2012 NCAADivision I Men’s Basketball Championship. The Elite 89 award,founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of thestudent-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached thepinnacle of competition at the national championship level in hisor her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standardamong his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to thestudent-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point averageparticipating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’schampionships.
Ohio State sophomore forward Jared Sullinger is the only player returning from last year’sWooden Award All American Team. Sullinger also was named as arepeat selection to the AP All-America team.
Kansas rallied from 13 down to end Ohio State’s season, 64-62,March 31 at the Superdome in New Orleans. Tyshawn Taylor made twobig free throws late, and Thomas Robinson finished with 19 pointsand eight rebounds for Kansas, who led for a grand total of 3minutes, 48 seconds. Senior William Buford led Ohio State with 19 points in his final gameas a Buckeye.
Women’s Basketball

Ohio State senior point guard Samantha Prahalis was named to the Associated Press All-Americasecond team March 27 while junior guard Tayler Hill picked up honorable mention honors.
Prahalis was named to the 2011-12 United States Basketball WritersAssociation (USBWA) Women’s All-America Team March 28. The honor isthe first of her career and the seventh for the Buckeyes in thepast eight years under head coach Jim Foster.
No. 12 Women’s Gymnastics

Ohio State was selected March 26 to compete as the No. 2 seedat the 2012 NCAA Regional Championships in Raleigh, N.C., hosted byNorth Carolina State at 4 p.m. April 7.
Ohio State sophomore Sarah Miller has been named to the Big Ten All-Championshipteam, the conference office announced. At the Big Ten ChampionshipsMarch 24 in Iowa City, Iowa, Miller posted a 9.850 to tie for thirdon balance beam and added a 9.875 to tie for fourth on floorexercise. The Collegeville, Pa., native tied for 10th on vault witha 9.875 as the Buckeyes finished second at the meet, Ohio State’shighest finish since 1989.
Men’s Lacrosse (4-6, 2-1 ECAC)

Ohio State dropped its first ECAC Lacrosse League game of theseason, falling to No. 4/5 Loyola, 8-7, March 31 at Ridley AthleticComplex in Baltimore.
No. 14 Women’s Lacrosse (7-3, 0-2 ALC)

With six points, including four goals, from senior Alayna Markwordt and a hat trick and four-point game fromfreshman Jackie Cifarelli, No. 14-ranked Ohio State posted a 15-9 roadwin at Hofstra March 29 in Hempstead, N.Y.
No. 14-ranked Ohio State lost to No. 1 Northwestern in overtime,13-12, March 31 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., in an ALCmatchup.
Softball (21-11, 5-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State swept a doubleheader against Wright State March 28at Buckeye Field. On a warm, but windy evening in Columbus, theBuckeyes defeated the Raiders, 6-0, in game one, before winning,6-2, in game two.
Ohio State swept a doubleheader at Michigan State March 31 atSecchia Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.
Ohio State claimed its first series sweep April 1 after defeatingMichigan State, 6-4, at Secchia Stadium.
Women’s Swimming and Diving

SamanthaCheverton, a former member of the Ohio State women’s swimmingteam, secured a spot on the Canadian Olympic team with asecond-place finish in the 200m free March 28 at the 2012 CanadianOlympic Trials held in Montreal. Cheverton and Team Canada willcompete at the 2012 London Olympics, July 27-August 12.
No. 2 Men’s Tennis (23-2, 5-0 Big Ten)

BlazRola was named the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week, theleague announced March 27. Rola, a native of Slovenia, has nowearned seven conference weekly honors, including six laurels duringthe 2011-12 season.
The six-time defending Big Ten champion and No. 2 Ohio State men’stennis team defeated Nebraska 6-1 March 29 at the Varsity IndoorTennis Center.
No. 2 Ohio State won both of its matches April 1 as part of adoubleheader. In the first match, the Buckeyes downed Iowa 7-0 intheir first match at the new outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts to moveto 5-0 in the Big Ten. The team also was victorious in its secondmatch of the day against Youngstown State 6-0 at the Varsity IndoorTennis Center.

Ohio State dropped the opening match of its Big Ten Conferenceweekend road trip, falling to No. 18-ranked Nebraska, 4-0, inLincoln, Neb., March 29.

Ohio State sprinter Chesna Sykes was named Big Ten co-Track Athlete of the WeekMarch 28 by the conference office after turning in two of thenation’s best times in Orlando last weekend at the UCFInvitational.

No. 10 Ohio State opened the weekend with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20,25-23) sweep of MIVA rival Loyola-Chicago March 30 in St. JohnArena.
In front of a handful of alumni, No. 10 Ohio State overpowered MIVArival No. 6/7 Lewis, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22), March 31 in St.John Arena.
