COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a tournament that came down the final holes, the Ohio State women’s golf team came out atop the 16-team leaderboard at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla. The Buckeyes fired a final round team score of 313 in blustery conditions to bring their total to 918 at the par 71, 6,017-yard Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club.
Tied for first with host Miami after 54 holes, both squads played in a tie-breaker which the Buckeyes captured after the second sudden death. The win was Ohio State’s first of the season and the team’s first since capturing the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational in 2010.
With a total of 219, Georgia State’s Charlotte Lorentzen took medalist honors.
Earning her second-consecutive top 5 finish, junior captain Amy Meier concluded the tournament tied for fourth at 226 after carding a final round of 80 that included two birdies on the front nine. The Rochester Hills, Mich., native also finished in a tie for fourth at the Central District Invitational (Feb. 20-21).
Also firing a final round of 80 to maintain her slot in the top 10 was junior Susana Benavides. Benavides, from Cochabamba, Bolivia, tallied a sum of 229 to finish in a tie for seventh.
Carding a total of 233 to tie for 17th, freshman Claudia Lim found a career-best finish after a final round of 79.
Senior Vicky Villanueva improved in the final round with a score of 74 after opening with rounds of 82 and 78 to place her in a tie for 22nd at 234.
Freshman Kendall Prince earned a round three score of 80, but did not place after a rule violation disqualified her score in round two.
Carding back-to-back birdies on hole Nos. 9 and 10, individual competitor junior Rachel Rohanna also finished the event tied for 17th after a round three score of 78.
The squad will return to action March 23-24 when the Buckeyes travel to Tucson, Ariz., to spend their spring break at the Mountain View Invitational.
