INDIANAPOLIS — Tayler Hill hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points as Ohio State (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 14 AP) held off a late charge to beat Michigan 57-48 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten women’s tournament Friday.
Kalpana Beach scored 12 points for the second-seeded Buckeyes (25-5). Big Ten player of the year Samantha Prahalisscored 11 points and her five assists made her the conference’s all-time leader, surpassing the previous mark of 892 by Northwestern’s Nancy Kennelly.
Carmen Reynolds scored 14 points and Courtney Boylan 10 for the seventh-seeded Wolverines (20-11).
Michigan used a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 45-39 with 7:49 left but could not close the gap. A big reason for that was the play of Hill, Beach and Ohio State’s young post players who helped Ohio State outrebound Michigan, 45-32.
It was a back and forth battle in the first half before Ohio State used their speed and athleticism on the defensive end to help blow the game open.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak by Ohio State to Michigan.
The Buckeyes are looking for their fourth straight tournament title and will take on No. 6 seed Nebraska at 5 p.m. Saturday on BTN. The Huskers defeatd No. 3 seed Iowa 80-68 in the second quarterfinal Friday.
