No. 2 Buckeyes Earn Back-to-Back Wins Sunday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team concluded a three-match weekend Sunday when it beat the University of Northwestern Ohio, 4-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Scarlet and Gray will now have a week off before heading south where they will play LSU at 3 p.m. March 19 and Georgia at 2:30 p.m. March 21.
Earlier Sunday, Ohio State beat conference opponent Penn State, 7-0, to move to 2-0 in the league. Overall, the Buckeyes are 18-1 and have won 81 consecutive Big Ten matches. Additionally, the wins vs. the Nittany Lions and the UNOH Racers mark Ohio State’s 139th and 140th-consecutive victories in Columbus.
For the 18th time this season, Ohio State opened its match with the doubles point win, this time vs. UNOH. An 8-2 victory by Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt over Jeff Brown and Juan Cardenas at the No. 1 position preceded a shutout victory by Blaz Rola and Ille Van Engelen. Starting at No. 2 doubles, Rola and Van Engelen held Alexander Hager and Sam Rutter scoreless to lift the Buckeyes to an early 1-0 advantage.
Moving on to the singles competition, Smith relinquished only three points in his 6-1, 6-2 win vs. Cardenas on court four. Hunter Callahan, who played his second-consecutive match of the day and season, had a successful Sunday as he beat Rutter 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Finally, Nelson Vick earned an impressive victory over Emin Alpan 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to seal Ohio State’s win.
Matches on courts one, two and six went unfinished, but all three Buckeyes held convincing leads before the event was called.
