No. 2 Buckeyes Down No. 17 Tar Heels 6-1 to Move to 14-1 Overall – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team (14-1) remained unbeaten at home on the season after downing No. 17 North Carolina (3-4) 6-1 Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center. The victory extended the Buckeyes’ home win streak to 137 matches.
Devin McCarthy defeated William Parker 6-1, 6-2 on court five to earn the match-winning fourth point for the Scarlet and Gray. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native moved to 14-5 with the victory, including a 7-2 mark at No. 5.
Ohio State improved to 7-0-1 all-time vs. the Tar Heels and 36-32-1 vs. teams from the ACC.
In doubles, Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith were first to finish after an 8-1 win on court three against Cameron Ahari and Oystein Steiro. The Buckeye duo is 12-0 during the dual season.
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the nation’s top-ranked tandem, claimed the doubles point with an 8-4 triumph on court one over Tar Heels’ Brennan Boyajian and Esben Hess-Olesen. Buchanan and Rola are 18-2 overall, with a 9-2 mark at the No. 1 position.
McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen also picked up a win with an 8-6 victory on court two over Jose Hernandez and Joey Burkhardt. The duo is 19-5 overall for the season.
In singles, Rola gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead after quickly downing Boyajian 6-1, 6-2 on court two for his team-high 18th win. Buchanan, ranked 16th-nationally would follow with a 6-4, 6-4 win of his own on court one over No. 32 Hernandez to push the Buckeye lead to 3-0. The win was Buchanan’s 12th on the year.
McCarthy’s fourth point would soon follow.
In other singles action, Van Engelen downed Burkhardt 7-6, 6-2, Smith beat Steiro 6-2 3-6, 6-1, and Kobelt dropped a 7-6, 4-6, 7-10 decision to Hess-Olesen.
The Buckeyes hit the road again when they travel to Notre Dame for an 11:30 a.m. match March 3.
