Athletes of the Week
The 2012 Ohio State football team became the sixth Ohio State team in program history to finish a season unbeaten and untied after it defeated rival Michigan, 26-21, at Ohio Stadium Nov. 24. The Buckeyes are now 65-7 at Ohio Stadium since the start of the 2002 season, and at 12-0, have their longest win streak since the Scarlet and Gray went 10-0 during the 2007 campaign.
A total of 16 different Buckeyes were honored by the Big Tenfor their effort and outstanding play throughout the seasonincluding senior defensive end John Simon, who was named the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman ofthe Year, and sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller, who earned Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Yearhonors. Senior linebacker Zach Boren, who switched positions just past midseason fromstarting fullback to starting linebacker, was honored with a BigTen Sportsmanship Award. In addition to Simon, Miller and Boren,sophomore defensive back Bradley Roby, junior defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins, junior guard Andrew Norwell, sophomore linebacker Ryan Shazier and senior defensive back Travis Howard were named first- team all-Big Ten, while juniorrunning back Carlos Hyde, junior left tackle Jack Mewhort, junior safety Christian Bryant and junior receiver Corey Brown were named second-team all-Big Ten. Junior safetyC.J. Barnett, junior center Corey Linsley, senior tackle Reid Fragel and senior linebacker Etienne Sabino were named honorable mention all-Big Ten.
No. 4 Men’s Basketball (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Thad Matta
Ohio State defeated UMKC, 91-45, Nov. 23 at Value City Arena.Ohio State had five players reach double figures in scoring:Deshaun Thomas (21 points), Sam Thompson (11), Lenzelle Smith, Jr. (13), Shannon Scott (10), and LaQuinton Ross (11). Six Buckeyes scored or tied career highsin points: Sam Thompson (11), LaQuinton Ross (11), Amir Williams (6), Shannon Scott (10), Amadeo Della Valle (three) and Trey McDonald (two). The Buckeyes out-rebounded UMKC 40-30overall, and 31-16 on the defensive glass. Ohio State next travelsto Durham, N.C., to face No. 5 Duke in the Big Ten/ACC ChallengeNov. 28. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m.
No. 16/17 Women’s Basketball (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 70-54 Nov. 20 at ValueCity Arena. Senior guard Tayler Hill led all scorers with 23 points while junior forwardMartina Ellerbe scored a career high 10 points and was 4-for-4shooting. Freshman guard Ameryst Alston scored a personal best 10 points. The Buckeyesnext defeated Wright State, 82-52, on Sunday afternoon at ValueCity Arena. Hill and classmate Amber Stokes scored 17 and 13 points, respectively. Hill hasnow scored in double figures in 39 consecutive games, the longestactive streak in the Big Ten. Ohio State has won 25 consecutivehome games dating to the 2010-11 season, the longest active streakin the Big Ten and third longest in the nation behind Stanford (80)and Baylor (43). Ohio State’s last loss at home was to Northwesternon Feb. 6, 2011. The Buckeyes are back in action this Wednesdaywhen they head to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina TarHeels in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
No. 4 Football (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Michigan, 26-21, at Ohio Stadium Nov. 24.With the win, the 2012 Buckeyes became the sixth Ohio State team tofinish a season unbeaten and untied. Junior wide receiver Corey Brown ended the game with a career-best 95 yardsreceiving, topping the 87 yards he had vs. Miami (Ohio) earlierthis year.
Brown’s 21-yard rush in the second quarter marked a career long.
Sophomore wide receiver Devin Smith’s 52-yard reception in the first quarter marked hisfourth reception of 50-plus yards this season. Junior running backCarlos Hyde rushed for over 100 yards this season and his sixthcareer game with 100-plus yards. Senior linebacker Zach Boren led the team with nine tackles, including threesolos. He collected his first career sack in the second quarterfollowing a big hit on Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner andnotched his first career fumble recovery. Since moving fromfullback to linebacker during Week 7 of the season, Boren posted 49tackles, including a combined 21 stops in the last two weeks.Sophomore defensive back Bradley Roby posted eight tackles against Michigan, all but oneof which was solo while Ryan Shazier collected his fifth sack of the season in thesecond quarter. Shazier finished his sophomore season with ateam-high 115 tackles and 17.0 tackles for loss. The OSU defenseforced at least one turnover in 10 of 12 games in 2012 and tied aseason high of four vs. the Wolverines.
Men’s Hockey (5-4-3, 4-2-2-1 CCHA)

Ohio State defeated Lake Superior State, 4-1, in Taffy AbelArena Nov. 23. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period on asophomore Matt Johnson goal and classmate Ryan Dzingel scored in the second for a 2-0 after 40 minutes.Sophomore Max McCormick extended the lead to 3-0 in the third before theLakers broke up the shutout with a power play goal at the 16:22mark. Junior Chris Crane sealed the win for the Buckeyes with an empty-netgoal. Sophomore Tanner Fritz was the lone Buckeye with multiple points, postingtwo assists for the second-consecutive game; senior goalie Brady Hjelle had 31 saves. Ohio State dropped the series finaleat Lake Superior State, 3-2, Nov. 24. Ryan Dzingel and sophomore forward Darik Angeli tallied the two scores for the Buckeyes, whileTanner Fritz had two assists for the third-consecutive game.Hjelle earned CCHA Goaltender of the Week for the second time thisseason after posting a league-best 1.14 goals-against average and.961 save percentage over the weekend. Ohio State will travel toMichigan State this weekend for two games. The squads will face offat 8:05 p.m. Friday in a game televised live by BTN and at 6:05p.m. Saturday in a contest televised by Comcast.
Women’s Hockey (11-5-0, 8-4-0 WCHA)

Ohio State scored four goals in the final period to come backfrom two scores down and outlast Princeton, 4-2, Nov. 23 at HobeyBaker Rink in Princeton, N.J. Sophomore forward Danielle Gagne scored the game-tying and game-winning goals forthe Buckeyes while freshman forward Julia McKinnon scored her seventh goal of the season andsophomore forward Kayla Sullivan picked up an empty-net goal with 26 secondsremaining in the game. Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp made 19 saves in the win. The Buckeyes were upsetby Princeton, 2-1, on a late third period goal in game two of thenon-conference series Nov. 24. Junior forward Ally Tarr scored the lone goal for the Buckeyes, while juniorgoaltender Lisa Steffes got her first start of the season for Ohio State,stopping 19 of 21 shots. The Buckeyes next travel to Mankato,Minn., for a league series with Minnesota State Nov. 30 – Dec. 1

No. 14 Women’s Volleyball (22-10, 13-7 Big Ten)

Ohio State traveled to No. 1 Penn State Nov. 21, falling to thetop-ranked Nittany Lions, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-14). SeniorMari Hole led the Buckeyes with 10 kills and added eight digsin the loss. Junior Kaitlyn Leary finished with six kills while sophomore Anna Faul had three kills and two blocks. Libero Davionna DiSalvatore totaled 10 digs for Ohio State. TheBuckeyes closed out the regular season with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23,18-25, 20-25) loss to Michigan Nov. 23 in St. John Arena. Mari Hole led the Scarlet and Gray with 15 kills and 11 digsfor her 17th double-double of the season. Kaitlyn Leary followed with 14 kills and a career-high eightdigs. Anna Faul notched a career-high eight kills for Ohio State andled all student-athletes with six blocks. Davionna DiSalvatore had a team-high 15 digs while seniorEmily Danks had nine kills with four blocks. The Buckeyes nexttravel to Lexington, Ky., to face Notre Dame (20-9) Nov. 30 at 5:30p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The selection isthe fourth-straight for the Buckeyes who have reached the Sweet 16the past two years.
