Athletes of the Week
Junior assistant captain Paige Semenza of the women’s hockey team put together one of the best weekends of her career, scoring two goals and dishing out a pair of assists in Ohio State’s series split with nationally-ranked North Dakota. In Friday’s win, the Pittston, Pa., product first nabbed an assist on the team’s second goal of the first period at 7:19. She then scored the team’s game-winning goal at 12:08 in the first – the third of the period for the Buckeyes. After a North Dakota checking call put the Buckeyes on the power play, Semenza notched her first PP goal of the season and the second of her career. In Saturday’s loss, Semenza put the team’s first goal on the board, scoring a short-handed goal at 4:32 in the third. She then picked up an assist five minutes later, lending a hand on Melissa Feste’s goal at 9:32.
Senior co-captain Shawn Sangrey had another solid weekend of play for the OhioState men’s volleyball team, leading the team to a 1-1 finish atthe Ken and Dave Dunlap Invitational held in St. John Arena, Jan.27-28. In the 3-1 win over then-No. 12 ranked Pacific, Sangrey ledall attackers with 26 kills and finished with a .360 attackpercentage. Totaling a match-best 27 points in the win, he alsoadded two block assists and 13 digs in the win. The next day,Sangrey tied a career-high with 30 kills in the team’s 3-2 loss tothen-No. 4 Stanford. The 30 kills led all attackers and had a .375attack percentage in the match. His 33.5 points in the match wasalso a match-best. Defensively, Sangrey totaled seven digs and fourblocks (1s, 3a) on the night.
No. 4 Men’s Basketball (19-3, 7-2 Big Ten)

JaredSullinger had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 4 Ohio Statetook advantage of Penn State’s slow start to roll to a 78-54victory Jan. 25.
Lenzelle Smith Jr. scored 17 points and had a career-high 12rebounds as No. 4 Ohio State flexed its muscle inside to beat No.20 Michigan 64-49 Jan. 29, keeping the Buckeyes in a first-placetie in the Big Ten.
No. 9 Women’s Basketball (20-2, 7-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State senior point guard Samantha Prahalis has been named the Big Ten player of the weekin recognition of her performance last week in wins over No. 20Nebraska and Illinois.
Prahalis had 18 points and nine assists to help the Buckeyes beatIndiana 73-55 Jan. 26.
Prahalis was named to the Women’s Wooden Award Midseason Top 20list Jan. 27 by The Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Prahalis snapped to life in the second half with 19 of her 25points, but No. 9 Ohio State never fully recovered from their earlyshooting struggles and lost, 76-65, to Minnesota Jan. 29.Minneapolis native Tayler Hill led the team with 26 points, but she shot just 3for 11 from 3-point range. Ohio State missed a chance to move intoa first-place tie with Purdue in the conference race after theBoilermakers lost at Iowa Jan. 28.
Fencing

Ohio State posted impressive results at the St. John’sInvitational Jan. 21 and Jan. 22 at the New York UniversityInvitational. The sixth-ranked Buckeye women finished the weekend acombined 10-1 while the fifth-ranked men notched a 9-2record.
No. 11 Women’s Gymnastics

No. 11 Ohio State defeated Pittsburgh 195.625-193.500 Jan. 27in Fitzgerald Field House in front of a crowd of 1,012people.
No. 6/7 Men’s Ice Hockey (14-8-5, 10-7-5-1 CCHA)

No. 6/7-ranked Ohio State lost a road game at Lake SuperiorState, 1-0, Jan. 27 in Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 34-24, in the game, with Buckeyegoalie Cal Heeter making 23 saves, but an early first-period goal byLSSU stood as the gamewinner.
With a hat trick from freshman Max McCormick, along with three assists from rookie Tanner Fritz, No. 6/7 Ohio State skated to a 4-4 overtime tieat Lake Superior State Jan. 28 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. TheLakers won the shootout, 2-1 in three rounds, to pick up the extrapoint in the CCHA standings. McCormick scored the Buckeyes’shootout goal to complete his night.
Women’s Ice Hockey (14-10-4, 11-10-1-1 WCHA)

A flurry of Buckeye goals in the first period gave Ohio Statean early lead as the Scarlet and Gray skated to a 6-2 victory overconference foe No. 5 North Dakota Jan. 27 at the OSU IceRink.
Ohio State dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 5 North Dakota Jan. 28 atthe OSU Ice Rink to split the WCHA series with UND.
Pistol
Head coach: James Sweeney
Ohio State competed in the OSU Varsity Pistol Winter Open Jan.27 and 28 at Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range in Converse Hall. The Buckeyeswon the event with a 6,374 aggregate score while The Citadelfinished second at 5,820 and Michigan State posted a 5,204.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Wadley and Vince Panzano
Ohio State’s Jason Schnur and Bianca Alvarez picked up Big Ten honors in swimming and divingfor their weekend performances. Schnur was named men’s swimmer ofthe week in the conference, while Alvarez shared women’s diver ofthe week honors with Indiana’s Amy Cozad.
In a two-day swimming and diving tri-meet with Michigan and PennState, Ohio State finished second after the conclusion of thecompetition Jan. 28. Michigan defeated Ohio State 194-140, whilethe Buckeyes bested Penn State 243-91. Michigan topped Penn State264-70.

Synchronized Swimming

Behind a sweep in the solo, duet and trio routines, OhioState’s Gray Team compiled 101 points to win the MinnesotaInvitational Jan. 28 at the Art Downey Aquatic Center in Edina,Minn. Minnesota finished second with 76.5 points and CarletonCollege earned 67.5 points for third place.
No. 3 Men’s Tennis (6-0)

IlleVan Engelen was named Big Ten athlete of the week, the Big TenConference announced Jan. 24. It is the first league weekly laurelof Van Engelen’s career.
Third-ranked Ohio State downed No. 29 Indiana 4-0 Jan. 29 in thechampionship match of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the VarsityTennis Center in Columbus. With the victory, the Buckeyes will beone of 16 teams to compete at the 2012 ITA National Team IndoorChampionship Feb. 17-20 in Charlottesville, Va. The University ofVirginia will serve as hosts.
Third-ranked Ohio State picked up its sixth win of its springschedule after defeating Toledo 4-0 Jan. 29 at the Varsity IndoorTennis Center. It was the Buckeyes’ second victory of the day afterdefeating No. 29 Indiana 4-0 earlier in the evening during the 2012ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship.

56th-ranked Ohio State fell to No. 29 Texas A&M, 5-2, Jan.29 in the consolation match at the Intercollegiate TennisAssociation Kick-Off event in Tallahassee, Fla.

CoryLeslie broke his own school record in the mile Jan. 28 at thePenn State National Invitational in University Park, Pa.,highlighting the final day of competition at Ashenfelter III IndoorTrack for No. 11 Ohio State.

No. 14 Ohio State faced many of the nation’s best to wrap upthe Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at the University of Kentucky Jan.28. The Scarlet and Gray racked up 12 top 3 finishes and three goldmedals on day two of the competition. Several new PRs were set aswere top times in the nation by the Buckeyes in their third meet ofthe season.
No. 10 Men’s Volleyball (6-4)

Senior co-captain Shawn Sangrey was named Offensive Player of Week by theMidwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, the leagueannounced Jan. 23. The honor is the first of the season for Sangreyand the ninth of his career.
