No. 3 Buckeyes Capture ITA Kick-Off Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The third-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team (5-0) downed No. 29 Indiana (3-2) 4-0 Sunday in the championship match of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus. With the victory, the Buckeyes will be one of 16 teams to compete at the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 17-20 in Charlottesville, Va. The University of Virginia will serve as hosts.
It is the sixth-consecutive season the Buckeyes have advanced to the National Indoors under head coach Ty Tucker.
Ille Van Engelen clinched the victory for Ohio State for the second-consecutive match after a 6-1, 7-6 win on court five vs. Indiana’s Alastair Barnes. Van Engelen is 5-0 on the season in singles matches.
The Buckeyes beat No. 44 Cornell 5-1 and the Hoosiers defeated No. 28 Notre Dame 4-1 Saturday in the first round of the tournament in order to reach the title match.
Ohio State moves to 44-39 all-time against Indiana. Under Tucker’s tutelage, the Buckeyes are 12-2 vs. their Big Ten foe, with all 12 victories occurring consecutively dating back to the 2000-01 season.
In doubles, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the nation’s top-seeded pair, were the first duo to finish, wrapping up an 8-3 victory over Indiana’s Isade Juneau and Jeremy Langer. The Buckeyes went on to grab the doubles point after 15th-ranked Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen defeated Josh MacTaggart and Barnes 8-2.
Peter Kobelt gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 advantage after beginning singles action with a straight set 6-3, 6-3 triumph vs. Stephen Vogl. Smith defeated Indiana’s Will Kendall 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Van Engelen came away with the fourth point on court five shortly after to end the match.
With the win against the Hoosiers, the Buckeyes have now won 133 consecutive matches in Columbus, dating back to the 2002-03 season. The netters also boast an impressive 203-13 record since the 2005-06 season.
Following a nonconference match vs. Toledo Sunday night at 6 p.m., the Buckeyes continue their demanding spring slate at 6 p.m., Feb. 3 against No. 12 Pepperdine at the Varsity Tennis Center.
